Mittelbergheim ligt langs de ‘Route des vin d’Alsace‘ aan de voet van de Sainte-Odile, de berg van de patroonheilige van de Elzas. Het dorp vormt een prachtige eenheid met de omgeving waar wijngaarden het landschap domineren. Naast het prachtige landschap kan je hier natuurlijk genieten van de wijn die rondom het dorp wordt verbouwd.

Wij bezochten het dorp in de herfst en dan is de streek waarschijnlijk op zijn mooist. De wijngaarden zijn dan diep rood gekleurd als je net als wij het geluk hebt van mooi weer dan worden deze belicht door een heldere zon. De rit tussen de wijngaarden naar het dorp was prachtig en de verwachtingen van het dorp stegen dan ook met de minuut.

Eenmaal in het dorp viel het eigenlijk allemaal een beetje tegen. Ik kan het moeilijk duiden want er zijn zeker mooie huizen, een niet al te mooie kerk maar het is er gewoon niet zo gezellig. Ik denk dat het vooral met de vorm van het dorp te maken heeft. Zo is er niet echt een centraal punt zoals een mooi plein waar je even lekker kan zitten en genieten van de huizen. Er zijn wel mooie straatjes maar die zijn niet schilderachtig als je zou verwachten in een Plus Beaux Village de France.
Het kan ook te maken hebben dat op de middag van ons bezoek er niemand op straat was. Het dorp leek compleet uitgestorven en werkelijk alles was dicht. Nu waren we er niet in de zomer en dan is het wellicht anders, maar het was toch een mooie dag in de herfst en andere dorpen zoals Keyserberg was wel van alles te doen. We keerden na een wandeling door het dorp een beetje teleurgesteld terug naar onze gîte.
Wijnbouw
De wijnbouw is al heel oud in Mittelbergheim. Volgens de bronnen werd hier al door de Romeinen druiven verbouwd om het edele vocht te produceren. Uit die tijd in het dorp niets meer te vinden maar op het centrale pleinstaan prachtige huizen in renaissance stijl. Verder heeft Mittelbergheim twee kerken , een katholieke en een protestantse. Dat is voor Nederlanders niet echt iets bijzonder, maar in Frankrijk zie je dat niet heel vaak. Behalve dan weer in de Elzas waar in bijvoorbeeld Hunawihr zelfs twee verschillende diensten in één kerk worden gegeven.
Vanaf het dorp heb je een prachtig uitzicht over de wijngaarden waar met name de Sylvaner druif wordt verbouwd. Deze had in het verleden niet zo’n goede naam omdat de kwaliteit van de wijn niet altijd even goed is. Uit ervaring kan ik vertellen dat de Sylvanerwijn uit de Elzas goed te doen is. Proeven die je in één van de vele cave’s die elk hun eigen gesmeden uithangbord hebben.
Mont Sainte-Odile
Een bezoek aan Mittelbergheim is niet compleet met een beklimming van de Mont Sainte-Odile. Deze berg met zijn begroeide kliffen van zandsteen speelt een belangrijke in de geschiedenis en de identiteit van de streek. De naam dankt de berg aan de patroonheilige van de Elzas die in de zevende eeuw hier stierf.
Het is echter duidelijk dat de berg voor het christendom al een plek was voor mystiek en geloof. Sinds de elfde eeuw staat er een klooster en die is zeker de moeite waard om te bezoeken. Het uitzicht vanaf het terras van het klooster over het Rijndal is indrukwekkend.
