Het dorp Beuvron-en-Auge ligt vlakbij Caen en heeft één van de mooiste dorpspleinen in Normandië. Er staan meer dan veertig vakwerkhuizen en op het plein staat een prachtig houten markthal. Helaas is deze laatste niet heel oud, hij stamt uit de jaren zeventig van de vorige eeuw. Dat maakt voor het plaatje echter niet veel uit, het blijft een uiterst fraai plein.

Wij bezochten Beuvron en Auge begin mei op onze terugreis uit Cotentin. Het dorp lag heerlijk in het zonnetje en zag er prachtig uit dankzij de uitbundige bloesem. De Fransen waren die dag ook vrij en genoten van de cider op de terrassen, het was kortom een gezellige en aangename boel.

Beuvron-en-Auge ligt in de Calvados en een beetje Frankrijkganger weet dat dit appels betekent. In de omgeving van het dorp zijn ook veel appelboomgaarden te vinden en beter nog, de bewoners van deze streek maken er heerlijke dingen van.

Appeltaart vind je hier bij elke bakker maar de bekendste drank is natuurlijk de Calvados. Deze drank heeft een alcoholpercentage van boven de veertig procent wordt gemaakt van appelcider en lijkt een beetje op Cognac. Ik ben er dol op, vooral de VSOP is heerlijk zacht terwijl de goedkope versie het goed doet in de koffie met slagroom.

In Normandië drink je appelcider

De appelcider zelf is ook een aanrader. Waar in de rest van Frankrijk vooral wijn wordt gedronken, drinken de Normandiërs deze appeldrank met een vrij laag alcoholpercentage. Cider koop je in grote flessen met een Champagnekurk en heeft een heerlijke frisse smaak die uitstekend combineert met kaas zoals een camembert. In de rest van Frankrijk is het spul bij grote supermarkten ook te koop en het is een aangename afwisseling van rosé op een warme dag.

In Beuvron-en-Auge zijn verschillende winkeltjes waar je de plaatselijke lekkernijen kan kopen. Deze zijn natuurlijk ook te krijgen bij één van de restaurants in het dorp waar je bij mooi weer dit lekkers op het terras tot je kan nemen. Mocht je onverhoeds te veel naar binnen werken en niet meer in staat zijn auto te rijden, dan zijn er verschillende aangename mogelijkheden om te overnachten. Er zijn mindere bezigheden in het leven.

Naast winkels met lekkers vindt je in het dorp veel galeries en ateliers. Er wonen dus ook kunstenaars die hun werk aanbieden. We hebben ons niet verdiept op de kwaliteit van deze waar dus ik kan niet vertellen of het de moeite waard is. Daarbij speelt bij dit soort zaken altijd een persoonlijke smaak dus je moet het zelf maar bekijken. Er is in ieder geval genoeg keuze.

De vakwerkhuizen geven Beuvron-en-Auge zijn karakteristieke beeld. De meeste van deze huizen dateren uit de zeventiende en de achttiende eeuw. De mooiste is echter ouder en gebouwd in zestiende eeuw en staat op het kruispunt vlakbij het pleintje met de markthal. Voor kinderen en (sommige) mannen is er een museum met modeltreintjes.

Er is kortom genoeg om je voor een halve dag te vermaken in dit mooie dorp. Zeker als je daarna nog wat eet, wat je hier goed kan doen.

Clermont-en-Auge

Een dikke vijf kilometer ten noorden van het dorp bij het gehucht Clermont-en-Auge staat de Chapelle Saint Michel de Clermont. Dit kleine kapelletje dateert uit de twaalfde eeuw en staat op de top van een heuvel met een prachtig uitzicht over het dal van Dives. Het gebouw is slechts te voet te bereiken via een pad dat door een beukenbos.
