De Seine kennen we natuurlijk als de rivier die door Parijs stroomt. De Seine is de kleinste van de grote rivieren in Frankrijk en mondt bij Le Havre in Normandië uit in het Kanaal. Zo’n rivier begint natuurlijk ook ergens en dat is in de Morvan en daar hebben de Fransen best iets leuks van gemaakt.

De Seine is net als de Maas een regenrivier, al de regendruppels worden verzameld en vormen zo met zijn allen de rivier. In het geval van de Seine gebeurt dit over een flink gebied dat grofweg tussen Dijon in het zuiden, België in het noorden, Toul in het oosten en Le Havre in het westen ligt. Dat zijn bijna allemaal Franse druppels als zitten er ook een paar bij die in het zuiden van België vallen.

Dit water verzamelt zich in allerlei stroompjes, beekjes en andere rivieren die uiteindelijk allemaal in de Seine uitmonden. Sommige rivieren zoals de Marne, Oise, Aube en Yonne zijn op zichzelf al grote en brede rivieren als ze zich bij de Seine voegen.

De Yonne is zelfs groter dan de Seine zelf waardoor het eigenlijk vreemd is dat de Seine vanaf het punt dat de Yonne in de Seine uitmondt, nog Seine heet. Het is namelijk normaal dat de als twee rivieren samen komen de rivier die daar uit ontstaat naar de grootste te noemen. Er zijn dus sterke argumenten om te zeggen dat Parijs aan de Yonne ligt. Al is dat nogal een operatie want alleen de dorpen en steden hernoemen die de naam van de rivier voeren is al een stevige klus.

Côte d’or

Maar terug naar de Seine en wel de bron daarvan. Deze ligt ten noordwesten van de Dijon en aangezien onze gîte daar slechts 15 kilometer vanaf lag konden we niet laten om er even te gaan kijken. Wie houdt er immers niet van een mooi startpunt van zoiets beroemd als de Seine, ik wil in ieder geval.

Het begin van de rivier ligt in het plaatsje Saint-Germain-Source-Seine; een mooie functionele naam waardoor er bijna meer geen verwarring kan ontstaan bij de hedendaagse toerist. Die verwarring is er ook niet want je rijdt er zo heen.

Groene vallei

De bron, of beter bronnen want het water op deze plek borrelt op meerdere plekken omhoog, van de Seine bevinden zich in een mooie smalle groene vallei. Het is een aangename plek die goed is aangegeven en je de auto parkeer je gewoon naast de weg, de D103 in dit geval.

Parijs is niet ver weg want sinds 1865 is de hoofdstad eigenaar van de grond waar de rivier zijn oorsprong vindt. Dat is altijd een leuk om totaal onbelangrijke feitje om te weten, wie is er niet dol op!

Het hoofdstedelijk bestuur heeft wel iets van de plek gemaakt want de bronnen bevinden zich in een goed onderhouden parkje met een mooi gazon, mooie bomen, een aantal beelden en natuurlijk de bron zelf. Hieruit zoekt de jonge Seine de weg naar de zee en slingert zij zich door het gazon zoals zij honderden kilometer verder ook doet in het Normandische landschap.

Godin

De bron, of beter de hoofdbron, is te bewonderen als een klein bassin in een halve grot. Midden in het water staat een beeld van Seqvana, een Keltische godin met die bekend was vanwege haar helende krachten. De grot komt niet echt natuurlijk over maar ik ben er niet achter gekomen of die ook door mensen is gemaakt voor de leuk en de mooi.

Het beeld stamt uit de negentiende eeuw en zal niet de nobelprijs voor de kunst winnen. Het staat er wel leuk in de grot met het heldere water dat er onder stroomt.

Het is een gemoedelijk plek in de Bourgondische heuvels en dat was onze voorouders ook al opgevallen. De Galliërs hadden hier al een heiligdom gebouwd ter ere van de eerder genoemde godin en nadat de Romeinen het gebied hadden overgenomen ontstond er vlakbij een kleine nederzetting.

Romeinen

Nu waren de Romeinen dol op water en het moet hier in de oudheid een redelijke drukke boel zijn geweest, veel drukker dan nu in ieder geval. Tijdens ons bezoek was het niet mogelijk om de Romeinse resten te bekijken want deze waren allemaal afgezet voor archeologisch onderzoek.

Het parkje nodigt uit voor een wandeling maar we kwamen er al snel achter dan je niet heel erg ver komt. Na een paar honderd meter liepen we tegen een hek aan. Er is wel een wandelroute maar die loopt gewoon over de weg.

We hebben ons even goed prima vermaakt door over de eerste brug over de Seine te lopen en de beelden te bekijken. Het is ook bij mooi weer een prima plek voor een goede picknick.
