Moncontour ligt strategisch op een heuvel op de plaats waar de rivieren Evron en de Ruisseau de l’Etang samenkomen. Het dorpje heeft een lange militaire geschiedenis en dat is te zien aan de muur die het hele dorp omringt. Eenmaal binnen is het genieten van de prachtige kleine straatjes waar je de middeleeuwen kan ruiken.

Het hele dorp was ooit compleet ommuurd maar een deel daarvan is in de zeventiende eeuw verwoest op bevel van Richelieu. Jammer natuurlijk maar dat mag de pret niet drukken want het andere deel staat er gewoon nog en dat geeft sfeer genoeg. Het centrum is gezellig en het is heerlijk wandelen door de schilderachtige straatjes.

Het dorp, of eigenlijk stadje, beleefde in de zeventiende eeuw een economische bloei dankzij de productie van linnen en jute. Veel mooie huizen die er nu nog staan zijn in die tijd gebouwd. In één daarvan is een kostuummuseum gevestigd. Het betreft een zeer uitgebreide verzameling van toneelkostuums van de middeleeuwen tot de vroege twintigste eeuw.

Tot slot is het kerkje Église St-Mathurin interessant. Hij is gebouwd in de zestiende eeuw maar helemaal herbouwd in de achttiende en heeft een mooie renaissance gevel. Loop zeker even binnen want de glas-in-lood ramen zijn nog origineel.
