Sant’Antonino op Corsica ligt op een 500 meter hoog plateau in de Balagne. Het dorp vormt bijna een perfecte cirkel en heeft een prachtig uitzicht over de hele streek en de zee. Het water is de reden waarom het dorp zo hoog ligt. Het gaf de plaatselijke bevolking een goede schuilplaats als er aan de horizon piraten of ander plunderend tuig verschenen.

Dat gebeurt nu niet zo heel vaak meer en nu vormt Sant ‘Antonino met zijn hoge granieten huizen één van de grootste toeristische attracties van de regio.

Het dorp is gebouwd in een spiraalvorm en heeft een relatief klein oppervlakte. De smalle geplaveide straatjes volgen deze vorm en hebben een enorm pittoresk gehalte. Dat is heerlijk voor toeristen die hier in de zomer ook veel te vinden zijn. De vorm van het dorp lijkt een beetje op een slakkenhuis en dat is ook de bijnaam van het dorp.

In het doolhof van de kleine straatjes en stegen is het heerlijk verdwalen. Er zijn een aantal bezienswaardigheden die je bij een wandeltocht kan tegenkomen. Natuurlijk is er een mooi kerkje en wel uit de elfde eeuw van het type Romaans. Ook is er een oude bakker, het gebouw althans, waarvan de oven nog helemaal intact is.

Sant ‘Antonino is gebouwd op een grote granieten rots en kijkt over de hele streek uit met op de achtergrond de berg Monte Grosso. Volgens de bekende gids van de bandenfabrikant is dit uitzicht zelfs het mooiste wat er te vinden is in het dorp. Of dat waar is moet je zelf maar bepalen, hoe dan ook nodigt de directe omgeving van het dorp wel uit tot een wandeling.

In de zomer is er genoeg open en is het druk, kom je buiten het seizoen dan kan het hier echt stil zijn en is ook niet alles open.
