Limeuil ligt waar de rivier de Vézère uitmondt in de Dordogne in de Perigord. Het dorp is misschien één van de oudst nu nog bewoonde plek in Frankrijk want hier zijn spulletjes gevonden van mensen die aan het einde van de laatste ijstijd op rendieren en mammoeten jaagden. Dat moet een stevige barbecue zijn geweest. Daar is tegenwoordig niet veel meer van te zien maar dat gelukkig is er nog genoeg te beleven.

Het dorp ligt in de streek Perigord Poupre dat zo is genoemd naar de bladeren van de wijnranken die in de herfst paars kleuren.

De strategische ligging aan de rivieren heeft voor- en nadelen. Dankzij de haven floreerde de handel maar aan de andere kant was het dorp bij een conflict snel de Jacques. Dat gebeurde met name tijdens de honderdjarige oorlog in de veertiende eeuw waarin het dorp het behoorlijk voor de kiezen kreeg. Gelukkig werd het voor de inwoners in de eeuwen daarna flink rustiger.

In de achttiende- en de negentiende eeuw ging het erg goed met Limeuil. De haven zorgde voor handel en in het dorp waren tientallen ambachtslieden actief die op hun beurt zorgden voor handelswaar. Nu herinneren het oude havenkantoor en een pakhuis nog aan deze tijd. Opvallend is dat beide panden nu een restaurant herbergen.

Het kerkje stamt uit de dertiende eeuw en is gewijd aan Sint Maarten. Dat is niet zo gek want hij was de bisschop van Tours en dat is niet heel ver weg. Er stond toen al een kerk en tot het einde van de achttiende eeuw had Limeuil twee kerken. Daar maakte de Franse Revolutie een einde aan want toen mocht het dorp nog maar één kerk hebben anders zou het alleen maar verwarring brengen.

Interessant is dat in 1960 achter het stucwerk in de kerk fresco’s werden gevonden waarvan een deel nu weer te zien is. Ook de gebrandschilderde ramen die in 2000 zijn gemaakt, zijn de moeite van het bekijken waard.

Naast de kerk en natuurlijk het dorp zelf is het park met panoramisch uitzicht de moeite waard om te bezoeken. Het ligt boven het dorp op de plek waar een kasteel heeft gestaan waar nu nog weinig van over is. Het park is ontworpen als Engelse tuin aan het begin van de twintigste eeuw rondom de ruïnes van het kasteel. Het park is in 2007 helemaal gerestaureerd.

Vanaf het park heb je een prachtig uitzicht over het dorp en de beide rivieren en dat maakt het een prima plek voor een picknick. Daarvoor met je wel vooraf de etenswaren kopen want het dorp heeft geen boulangerie. Bij warm weer geeft het strandje aan de overkant van de rivier verkoeling.
