Camon is een zeer klein dorpje in het zuiden Frankrijk in de streek Ariège. Het dorp is gebouwd rondom een middeleeuws klooster waar je kan slapen. Het historische gebouw is te bezichtigen maar is zeer populair om te trouwen.

In Camon wonen minder tweehonderd mensen maar die maken er wel wat moois van. Het dorp staat bekend om de bloemen die de historische gebouwen versieren. In mei wordt is er zelfs een rozenfeest en mocht je in het voorjaar in de buurt zijn dan is dat een echte aanrader.

Maar in de rest van het jaar is het natuurlijk ook prima om het dorp te bezoeken.

Het klooster zou door Karel de Grote in de achtste eeuw zijn gesticht. Of dit verhaal juist is, is niet duidelijk maar het gaf het klooster wel prestige. Zeker is wel dat de priorij in de tiende eeuw er al was en dat het werd versterkt zodat het goed verdedigd kon worden. In de dertiende en vijftiende eeuw werd het geplunderd waarna het in de zestiende eeuw weer werd opgebouwd. De meeste van de huidige gebouwen zijn uit deze tijd.

Een wandeling rondom de vestingwerken is een must bij een bezoek. Om Camon binnen te komen ga je door een prachtige poort. Het dorp heeft enkele mooi huizen waar enkele zijn uitgevoerd met vakwerk. Het klooster zelf is niet helemaal meer heel maar er is voldoende om interessant te zijn. In de kapel zijn fresco’s uit de veertiende eeuw te bewonderen en de kerk heeft een mooi altaarstuk. De overblijfselen van de koorgang maakt het romantische plaatje compleet, je zou er zo gaan trouwen.
