Candes-Saint-Martin ligt op de plek waar rivieren de Vienne en de Loire bij elkaar komen. Het dorp dankt zijn naam aan de Sint Maarten die hier aan de het einde van de vierde eeuw stierf. Het wek dan ook geen verbazing dat hier een kerk te vinden is die is gebouwd ter ere van deze heilige, die veel Nederlanders doet denken aan zingen, lampions en snoep.

De kerk is gebouwd in de twaalfde en dertiende eeuw, in de vijftiende eeuw is het versterkt. Het gebouw heeft een interessante gevel met veel details maar ook elementen uit de militaire architectuur. De binnenkant heeft opmerkelijk veel licht waardoor een zeer elegante uitstraling heeft.

Bij de kerk begint een pad dat voert naar een heuvel waar je prachtig uitzicht hebt over het landschap. De wandeling kost je ongeveer een kwartier. Tot slot heeft het dorp nog een aantal leuke straatjes waar een je wat kan nuttigen bij de salon de thé of het kleine restaurantje.
