Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire was in de middeleeuwen twee eeuwen lang één van de toonaangevende cultuurcentra in Frankrijk en daarmee in West-Europa. Hier stond een machtig klooster met een bibliotheek met een enorme collectie met de mooiste boeken van de wereld en misschien wel de mooiste die ooit zijn gemaakt.

Het leuke van vakantie is dat je zo nu en dan je onverwacht op mooie dingen stuit. De Pont Canal de Briare was er zo één voor mij. Deze kanaalbrug over de Loire ligt even ten oosten van Gien en is een prachtig voorbeeld van negentiende eeuwse voortuigangsdenken; een probleem met techniek oplossen én het nog mooi maken ook.

Het kasteel van Chambord is het grootste, duurste en indrukwekkendste kasteel in de Loire vallei en daar staan er nog al wat. Een bezoek aan dit chateau is dan ook een absolute must als je in de buurt van Blois bent.

Chenonceau is één van de meest karakteristieke kastelen van de Loire vallei. Iedereen kent het elegante kasteel dat over de rivier de Cher is gebouwd. Naast deze unieke eigenschap heeft het kasteel een bijzonder rijke geschiedenis die doet denken aan de soap waar jaloezie, hebzucht en de grootheidswaanzin van rijke mannen en sterke vrouwen de hoofdrol spelen. Maar bovenal heeft dit paleis een bijna onbeschrijfelijke schoonheid dat niet ophoudt bij het gebouw zelf.

De regio Centre is sinds begin 2016 samengevoegd met de Val de Loire en een ligt in het midden van Frankrijk, een beetje ten zuidwesten van Parijs. Het is net even kleiner dan Nederland maar heeft slechts tweeënhalf miljoen inwoners, er is hier dus lekker veel ruimte. De regio bestaat uit zes departementen te weten; Cher, Eure-et-Loir, Indre, Indre-et-Loire, Loir-et-Cher en Loiret.

Sainte-Suzanne ligt in Normandië ten westen van Le Mans op een rots zeventig meter boven de vallei van de rivier de Erve. Het dorp heeft prachtige versterkte muren met een opmerkelijke geschiedenis. Dit is namelijk de enige vesting in Normandië waar Willem de Veroveraar nooit in handen heeft gekregen. Toen was Sainte-Suzanne een stad in Normandië, nu is het een mooi dorp in de Pays de Loire met een prachtig centrum en een mooi uitzicht op de omgeving dat vraagt om verkend te worden, het liefst te voet of op de fiets.

Candes-Saint-Martin ligt op de plek waar rivieren de Vienne en de Loire bij elkaar komen. Het dorp dankt zijn naam aan de Sint Maarten die hier aan de het einde van de vierde eeuw stierf. Het wek dan ook geen verbazing dat hier een kerk te vinden is die is gebouwd ter ere van deze heilige, die veel Nederlanders doet denken aan zingen, lampions en snoep.

Naast wijn staat de Loire natuurlijk bekend om zijn kastelen. In het gebied rondom de rivier tussen Blois en Angers staan de mooiste kastelen van Frankrijk en misschien van de wereld. Montsoreau ligt langs de Loire en je vindt hier ook een prachtig voorbeeld, niet zo heel bekend maar niet minder mooi en zeker interessant.

Lavarin ligt ten noorden van Blois en vlakbij de kleine stad Vendôme. Het aanzien van het dorp wordt gedomineerd door de ruïne van  wat ooit een machtig kasteel was. In de kronkelige straatjes en steegjes staan tal van prachtige huizen.

Montrésor ligt aan de Loire tussen Tours en Angers. Het dorp heeft een interessant kasteel waarvan het oudste deel is gebouwd in de elfde eeuw. In de vijftiende eeuw is het gebouw grondig verbouwd in Franse renaissance stijl, dat was toen in. Daarnaast heeft het dorp een aantal prachtige huizen, een aardig kerkje en een mooie wolhal.
