Aha een lijstje! Je ziet ze veel op internet en dit is er ook één en wel mijn lijst van de mooiste plekken in de Provence. Het is een persoonlijke lijst en daarom volkomen subjectief. Desondanks zijn dit volgens mij de mooiste en bijzonderste plekken in de Provence, in willekeurige volgorde.

De stad van de pausen met een geweldige geschiedenis. De binnenstad is nog volledig ommuurt en barst van mooie straatjes en gezellig pleintjes. Maar Avignon is meer dan geschiedenis, want ook nu nog bruist de stad. Dat is zeker het geval tijdens het jaarlijkse culturele festival, want dan vult de stad zich met honderden straatkunstenaars en is er op elke hoek iets bijzonders te beleven.

Ongetwijfeld één van de mooiste plus beaux villages en decor van meerdere films. Gordes heeft een prachtig kasteel, nauwe straatjes en het ligt als een plaatje op een steile berg. Een ‘natural beauty’ dus dat in de zomer wordt overspoeld door toeristen. Als het even kan dus in het voor- of naseizoen bezoeken, maar zelfs op drukke dagen is dit dorp de moeite waard.

Op een kalkplateau tussen de Camargue en Arles staat de Abdij van Montmajour. Aan het uiterlijk van de gebouwen is te zien dat dit niet zomaar een klooster is. Met zijn hoge donjon is dit een origineel vechtklooster, die in het verleden meer dan eens het toneel was van strijd. Nu kan je de hoge toren beklimmen en heb je er een fantastisch uitzicht.

Of je nu wel of niet geïnteresseerd bent in geologie, dit is een topattractie van de natuur. De rivier de Verdon heeft zich in miljoenen jaren een weg gegeten door steen en zo is een nauwe kloof van 24 kilometer lang en 1.000 meter hoog ontstaan. Volgens de Fransen is dit te vergelijken met de Grand Canyon maar dat is misschien wel wat overdreven. Ik kan het moeilijk vergelijken want daar ben ik niet geweest, maar de Verdon is zeker indrukwekkend.

Vlakbij de Camargue, aan het begin van de delta van de Rhône, ligt deze oude stad met tal van historische monumenten. Hoewel de stad niet heel veel inwoners heeft, is het qua oppervlakte de grootste stad van Frankrijk. Dat is natuurlijk niet de reden waarom Arles in dit lijstje staat. Dat zijn namelijk de vele Romeinse monumenten, de Romaanse bouwwerken, maar bovenal de heerlijk ontspannen sfeer. Het was hier in Arles waar Vincent van Gogh zijn beste werk heeft gemaakt, maar waar hij uiteindelijk ook in een diepe crisis belandde. Historische grond dus dat Arles.

De reus van de Provence en de nachtmerrie van wielrenners is bijna twee kilometer hoog. Frankrijk heeft wel hogere bergen, maar geen enkele staat zo alleen in het landschap. Hierdoor heb je een geweldig uitzicht op de top, waar je kilometers onder je Avignon naast de Rhône ziet liggen.

Verscholen in een kloof ver weg van de bewoonde wereld ligt de abdij van Senanque. Het klooster is nog altijd in gebruik en heeft een zeer mystieke sfeer. Dankzij de lavendelvelden en de zon maakt iedereen hier een foto die eruit ziet als een ansichtkaart.
