Porquerolles is de grootste van de Îles d’Hyères, een eilandengroep heeft als bijnaam de Îles d’Or, ofwel de gouden eilanden gelegen even ten zuiden van Hyères in de Middellandse Zee. Dat is klinkt nogal pretentieus maar we hebben het hier wel over de Côte d’Azur waar alles een beetje overdreven is én laten we eerlijk zijn, ook vaak heel mooi. Porquerolles is dat zeker ook. Le Castellet ligt helemaal in het zuiden van Frankrijk even ten oosten van Toulon. Het dorp is vooral bekend om zijn autorace circuit maar heeft ook een zeer gezellig centrum met bochtige straatjes met kleurrijke winkels. De sfeer is uitstekend en op verschillende plekken heb je een fantastische uitzicht de kuststreek.

Cotignac ligt in op ongeveer een dik uur rijden van de kust en de Lac de Saint Croix. Het dorp, of misschien wel een stadje, heeft mooie pleintjes. Bijzonder is de buurtje dat tegen een tachtig meter hoge wand is gebouwd.

Het dorp Fontaine-de-Vaucluse gaf ooit zijn naam aan de hele streek en ligt even ten oosten van Avignon. Deze plek wordt al heel lang bewoond. Het snelle water van de rivier de Sorgue en de spectaculaire manier waarop dit even buiten het dorp boven de grond komt heeft altijd mensen getrokken. Francesco Petrarca is de beroemdste inwoner en het huis van deze dichter is dan ook te bezoeken. Toch was dit dorp nog niet zo heel lang geleden compleet verlaten en is het aan de opkomst van het toerisme dat het opnieuw is opgebouwd.

Grot van Thouzon ligt in de Vaucluse ten oosten van Avignon en ten noorden van het stadje Le Thor. Dat laatste is trouwens best een aardig plaatsje met een leuke kerk. Maar dat zijn er natuurlijk we meer in de Vaucluse. De grot is niet heel grot maar heeft wel indrukwekkende stalactieten aan het plafond hangen.

De Gorges de la Nesque is een diepe kloof in de Vaucluse en ligt even ten zuiden van Carpentras in de schaduw van de Mont Ventoux. Tussen Villes-sur-Auzon en Monieux loopt er door de kloof een prachtige weg met een spectaculair uitzicht op de rivier die zich vierhonderd meter lager door het landschap slingert. Het is hier niet zo druk als bij de Ardèche of de Verdon dus je kan overal makkelijk stoppen om even lekker van het uitzicht te genieten.

De tocht door de kloof is met de auto uitstekend te combineren met een bezoek aan Gordes, de Abdij van Sénanque of de Mont Ventoux.  Te voet of op de fiets kan ook prima maar dan ben je wel een dagje zoet.

De Gorges du Verdon is een diepe kloof en ligt in de Provence precies op de grens tussen de Alpes-de-Haute-Provence en de Var. Hier loopt de rivier de Verdon spectaculair door een 25 kilometer lange kloof tussen Castellane en het stuwmeer van Sainte-Croix. Omdat het groene water al een paar miljoen jaar stroomt heeft zich een ruig landschap met hoge steile kliffen gevormd. Dit prachtige natuurgebied in het zuiden van Frankrijk vraagt erom om verkend te worden, wij deden dat per auto en werden getrakteerd op een aaneenschakeling van indrukwekkende uitzichten, het houdt niet op hier.

De Abbaye de Sénanque is zo’n plek in Frankrijk waar ik altijd heen wil als ik in de buurt ben. Ik ben er al meerdere keren geweest, ik weet niet eens hoe vaak, maar ik raak er nooit uitgekeken. De eerste keer dat ik mij deze plek herinner is met mijn ouders met onze nieuwe Renault 14, een bizarre auto. Toen wij later als gezin neerstreken in de Vaucluse voor een vakantie wist ik één ding zeker; ik wil naar dat mooie klooster met de lavendelvelden.

De abdij van Montmajour ligt aan de weg tussen Baux de Provence en Arles. Het is nu een interessante ruïne met verschillende gebouwen waaronder een grote vierkante donjon. Dat laatste wijst op een militaire functie en dat heeft het gebouw ook meer dan eens gehad. Vandaag is de boel verlaten en is het binnen de dikke muren lekker koel bovendien heb je vanaf het donjon een prachtig uitzicht op Arles en de omgeving. Tel daarbij op dat dit uitzicht Vincent van Gogh heeft geïnspireerd tot het maken van bijzonder mooie schilderijen en je hebt één van de meest bijzondere ruïnes die ik heb bezocht in Frankrijk.

Saorge is een prachtig dorp op een dik half uur rijden vanaf Menton. Het ligt op een berg boven de rivier de Roya en ondanks dat het vlakbij de Côte d’Azur ligt is het zeer rustig en lijken de toeristen deze mooie plek nog niet ontdekt te hebben.

Dit geldt eigenlijk voor de hele streek want zelfs in augustus was het hier nog redelijk rustig. Toch kan je hier fantastisch wandelen, fietsen en zijn er ook voldoende mogelijkheden voor raften, kanoën en canyoning. Lees verder Saorge: dorp met de mooiste steegjes van Frankrijk **** →
