La Garde-Adhémar ligt zo’n twintig kilometer ten zuiden van Montélimar pal naast de autoroute du soleil. Het dorp is goed te zien vanaf de beroemde snelweg en vormde voor ons ooit een aangenaam uitzicht in een enorme bouchon. Het is gebouwd op een heuvel en heeft daarom een prachtig uitzicht op het Rhônedal, al moet je daarbij de eerder genoemde snelweg, een vliegveld, de TGV en een kerncentrale maar voor lief nemen. De Fransen willen nu eenmaal ook internetten en zich vervoeren.

La Garde-Adhémar werd al in de oudheid bewoond. Al is de plaats van de het dorp nu anders dan in de Romeinse tijd want toen lag onderaan de berg. Deze plek staat nu bekend onder de naam Val des Nymphes. Hier is een waterbron en het is duidelijk dat op deze plek godinnen werden aanbeden. Na de kerstening van Europa nam de kerk de plek over en in de elfde eeuw werd er een klooster gebouwd.

In de dertiende eeuw verhuisde de bevolking naar de plaats waar het dorp nu is omdat die beter te verdedigen was. Van de vier kerken die hier oorspronkelijk stonden is er nu nog één over maar de plek is absoluut de moeite van een bezoek waard.

In het dorp zelf staat natuurlijk ook een kerk. Het is een Romaans exemplaar met een achthoekige toren die in het midden van de kerk is geplaatst. Dat zie je wel meer bij Romaanse kerken in het zuiden van Frankrijk. Wat minder gewoon is, is de entree die rond van vorm is. De achterkant, of beter de westkant, van de kerk heeft dezelfde vorm.

Vlakbij de kerk is er een mooie kruidentuin die in de jaren negentig is aangelegd. Tot slot zijn er de verdedigingswerken die stammen uit de dertiende eeuw.
