Lotharingen ligt in het noordoosten van Frankrijk. De streek heeft een lange geschiedenis en heeft lang niet altijd tot Frankrijk behoord. Tot 1918 behoorde het samen met de Elzas bij Duitsland. Wie een beetje heeft opgelet bij de geschiedenislessen op school kent de streek ook vooral als Elzas-Lotharingen. Ik dacht lang dat het één streek was maar dat is natuurlijk niet zo. De connectie met de Elzas is trouwens niet alleen historisch want sinds 2016 vormt Lotharingen samen met die streek de regio Grand Est.

Over geschiedenis gesproken; in Lotharingen werd de grootste Franse held geboren. Of beter heldin want Jeanne d’Arc werd zag in het kleine dorp Domrémy-la-Pucelle voor het eerst het levenslicht. Als Frankrijk liefhebber staat die plek nog op mijn bucketlist.

De meeste Nederlanders rijden vooral door Lotharingen maar de laatste tijd wordt de streek steeds populairder als vakantiebestemming. Vooral de steden Metz en Nancy zijn zeker een bezoek waard maar ook de toenemende belangstelling voor de Eerste Wereldoorlog zorgt ervoor voor meer toeristen. Hierbij denk je natuurlijk direct aan Verdun waar gedurende een klein jaar één miljoen jonge mannen op een cynische manier de dood in werden gejaagd. Om dit soort nooit meer hoeven te voeren bouwde Frankrijk na deze oorlog de Maginotline aan de grens met Duitsland. Dit enorme verdedigingswerk bestond uit een aaneenschakeling van bunkers en forten waar een groot deel nog altijd in Lotharingen liggen. Omdat ze bijna niet zijn gebruikt in de Tweede Wereldoorlog zijn deze geheel onbeschadigd en nu gewoon te bezoeken.

Toch heeft de streek veel meer te bieden. Ondanks dat de streek veel oude industrie heeft, is er veel natuur om van te genieten. Hoewel het landschap glooiend is kan je hier met name langs de veel aanwezige kanalen uitstekend fietsen. De dorpen zijn hier niet zo toeristisch als in andere delen van Frankrijk wat nog niet wil zeggen dat ze minder mooi zijn. Tot slot kan je in Lotharingen uitstekend eten. De Quiche Lorraine is hier vanzelfsprekend maar ze maken hier ook heerlijke stoofschotels die worden weggespoeld met frisse witte wijn die wordt verbouwd langs de Moezel en de Maas.
