Er zijn plekken in Europa waar je intens verdrietig wordt én Verdun is daar er één van. Dit is de plek waar voor het eerst op een industriële schaal mensen werden gedood. Het ongekende geweld dat hier losbarstte en tien maanden voortwoekerde maakt Verdun een blijvend litteken op de West-Europese beschaving.

Een tiental kilometer boven Verdun staat midden in het dorpje Romagne-sous-Montfaucon een bijzonder museum. Hier kan je in een grote schuur naast de kerk midden in het dorp een indrukwekkende verzameling spullen uit de Eerste Wereldoorlog bekijken, voelen en ruiken.

Op zoek naar een bestemming niet al te ver van Nederland kom ik terecht in Marville in Lotharingen in de de zgn  ‘Gaume-streek’.  Een streek die bekend staat om zijn zachte klimaat en vele prachtige dorpjes met huizen van gele zandsteen aan zowel Belgische als Franse zijde van de grens. Wat Marville bijzonder maakt, is dat een aantal van de huizen in de Spaanse renaissancestijl gebouwd zijn toen de stad in de 16e eeuw was ingedeeld bij de Spaanse Nederlanden.

Lotharingen ligt in het noordoosten van Frankrijk. De streek heeft een lange geschiedenis en heeft lang niet altijd tot Frankrijk behoord. Tot 1918 behoorde het samen met de Elzas bij Duitsland. Wie een beetje heeft opgelet bij de geschiedenislessen op school kent de streek ook vooral als Elzas-Lotharingen. Ik dacht lang dat het één streek was maar dat is natuurlijk niet zo. De connectie met de Elzas is trouwens niet alleen historisch want sinds 2016 vormt Lotharingen samen met die streek de regio Grand Est. Saint Quirin is één van de weinige Beaux Villages in Lotharingen. Ik ken de streek ook niet heel goed, maar ik kan mij toch voorstellen dat er wel meer te vinden zijn. Het meest opvallende gebouw in het dorp is zonder twijfel de barokkerk waar de klokkentorens zijn versierd met uivormige punten. Dat doet meer aan Oostenrijk dan aan Frankrijk denken.

Rodemack ligt op een steenworp van de grens van Luxemburg in het noordoosten van Frankrijk. Het dorp in Lotharingen is geheel ommuurd en heeft een poort met twee prachtige ronde torens. Rodemack is de ideale stopplaats op weg naar het zuiden.

Na de Eerste Wereldoorlog besloot Frankrijk aan de oostgrens een enorme hoeveelheid forten, bunkers en andere versterkingen te bouwen om zich te verdedigen tegen een Duitse aanval. Deze verdedigingswerken zijn in de geschiedenis in gegaan als de Maginotlinie en was in die tijd het duurste defensieproject van Frankrijk. Het grootste en duurste fort van deze linie is Ouvrage Hackenberg en ligt nabij het dorp Vackering. Het mooie is dat het bijna compleet intact is en nog mooier, open voor het publiek, compleet met een rijdend ondergronds treintje.
