In het zuiden van de Puy de Dôme ligt Saint-Floret. Het dorp is gebouwd langs de rivier Couze Pavin, een zijrivier van de Allier. Saint-Floret bevat een aantal mooie verrassingen waaronder een aantal prachtige fresco’s in één van de gebouwen van het kasteel dat wel de steen des tijds heeft weerstaan.

Saint-Floret is een mooi voorbeeld van een dorp in de Auvergne. Het dorp wordt doorsneden door de snelstromende rivier. De oude brug uit de dertiende eeuw zorgt er nog altijd voor dat de bewoners van makkelijk het water over kunnen steken. Kennelijk waren ze daar in het verleden ook heel blij mee want midden op de brug is een kleine kapel, het is meer een kast, gebouwd. Dat helpt toch wel want zoveel bruggen uit de middeleeuwen zijn er niet meer.

Boven in het dorp staat een Romaans kerkje waar je een schilderij en een beeld van de heilige maagd met haar kind uit de veertiende eeuw kan bewonderen. Achter het kerkje is een kerkhof. Een slecht gekozen locatie want het begraven van de overleden dorpelingen ging moeilijk in de rotsen. Uiteindelijk zijn de graven uit het steen gehakt en deze sarcofagen zijn nog.
Kasteel
Zonder kasteel heb je geen echt Frans dorp en ook in Saint-Floret staat er één. Hij is niet helemaal zoals hij werd opgeleverd maar een kasteel in een goede staat van ontbinding kunnen we wel waarderen, anders gaan we wel naar de Elfteling, of Brugge.
Naast een toren staat nog gebouw en daar is iets bijzonders te zien. Op de wanden zijn fresco’s te zien uit de middeleeuwen. Nu zijn die al bijzonder maar meestal hebben die religieuze voorstelling, denk aan een lokale heilige of een scene van uit het leven van Jezus. Hier dus niet want deze fresco’s beelden het verhaal van Tristan en Isolde uit, hét romantische verhaal in de middeleeuwen.
Saint-Floret is sinds 2015 geen Plus Beaux Village meer en ik weet niet hoe dat zo is gekomen. Het blijft natuurlijk wel een mooi dorp en als je in de buurt bent een bezoek waard.
