Hunspach ligt in meest oostelijke punt van Frankrijk tegen Duitsland aan. Het dorp staat vol met witte vakwerkhuizen die opvallend op elkaar lijken. Kennelijk wilde iedereen hier hetzelfde huis. Het plaatsje wordt omringt door weilanden en boomgaarden. In 2020 werd Hunspach gekozen tot Le Village préféré des Français en was daarmee de derde dorp in de Elzas dat deze titel mag voeren.

Opvallend aan de huizen is het grote contrast tussen het wit van de muren en het de donkere kleuren van het houten vakwerk. Kenmerkend is de luifel die over de gevel uitsteekt en sommige huizen hebben nog originele dikbuikige ramen die tijdens de barok helemaal in waren.

Na de Eerste Wereldoorlog bouwde Frankrijk langs de grens met Duitsland een enorme verdedigingsgordel met tientallen bunkers. Eén van de grootste bunkers in deze Maginotlinie staat vlakbij Hunspach.
De Ouvrage d’artillerie de Schoenenbourg kreeg in juni 1940 de volle laag van het Duitse leger maar het was zo goed gebouwd dat het stand hield. Helaas reden de sluwe Duitsers met tanks om de hele linie heen en konden daarna gewoon doorrijden tot aan de kanaalkust. Frankrijk gooide na zes weken de handdoek in de ring en gaf Duitsland zo de grootste overwinning in zijn geschiedenis. Voor de streek rondom Hunspach had deze nederlaag in 1940 grote gevolgen. De Elzas werd weer onderdeel van Duitsland en zo moesten de mannen bijvoorbeeld dienst nemen in het Duitse leger.
De bunker bij het dorp is in het weekend geopend voor publiek en omvat onder andere een geschutskoepel, keuken en een drie kilometer lange gang waar een treintje reed. In de winter is het dicht. Het hele complex lijkt erg om de Hackenberg in Lotharingen.
