De streek bij de grens tussen Frankrijk en Italië bij Menton heeft één van de meest dramatische landschappen die ik ken. Hier duiken vanaf het noorden de Alpen de Middellandse Zee in en dat zorgt voor een prachtig samenspel tussen de ruige bergen en het blauwe water van de zee. Hoog in dit landschap ligt Sainte-Agnès, een dorp met een uniek uitzicht over de zee en de bergen.

Hunspach ligt in meest oostelijke punt van Frankrijk tegen Duitsland aan. Het dorp staat vol met witte vakwerkhuizen die opvallend op elkaar lijken. Kennelijk wilde iedereen hier hetzelfde huis. Het plaatsje wordt omringt door weilanden en boomgaarden. In 2020 werd Hunspach gekozen tot Le Village préféré des Français en was daarmee de derde dorp in de Elzas dat deze titel mag voeren.

Na de Eerste Wereldoorlog besloot Frankrijk aan de oostgrens een enorme hoeveelheid forten, bunkers en andere versterkingen te bouwen om zich te verdedigen tegen een Duitse aanval. Deze verdedigingswerken zijn in de geschiedenis in gegaan als de Maginotlinie en was in die tijd het duurste defensieproject van Frankrijk. Het grootste en duurste fort van deze linie is Ouvrage Hackenberg en ligt nabij het dorp Vackering. Het mooie is dat het bijna compleet intact is en nog mooier, open voor het publiek, compleet met een rijdend ondergronds treintje.
