Tussen het D-Day geweld op het schiereiland Cotentin is het makkelijk om de andere mooie en interessante plekken over het hoofd te zien. Het vissersdorp Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue met zijn mooie baai en oude forten is daar een goed voorbeeld van. Het ligt op half uur rijden van Utah-Beach en werd in 2019 door de Fransen zelf gekozen tot mooiste dorp van het jaar.

Cassel werd in 2018 gekozen door het Franse publiek gekozen tot het mooiste dorp van Frankrijk. Dat was natuurlijk voor ons een reden om eens een kijkje te nemen. Rochefort-en-Terre ligt in een prachtig gebied in het zuiden van Bretagne dat bekend staat als de bloementuin van de streek. Nu zijn wij wel wat gewend in Nederland als het om bloemen gaat, maar dit dorp kan zich qua bloemen meten met wat wij hier in Nederland hebben. De straatjes en pleintjes in het dorp zijn in een uitzonderlijk goede conditie.

De dorpen in de Elzas zijn zo schilderachtig dat je van tijd tot tijd toch twijfelt of de hele streek niet is bedacht in een studio ergens in Amerika, in vijf jaar gebouwd volgens een strak thema en de inwoners gewoon acteurs zijn. Voorzover ik kan nagaan is dat niet het geval maar als je door Kaysersberg loopt dan vraag je het je echt af. De mooie straatjes met de prachtige kleurrijke huizen, de versterkte brug met zijn kapeltje, het kasteel dat in perfecte staat van ontbinding op het dorp neerkijkt en de vallei met de uitzonderlijke goede balans tussen bossen en wijngaarden die als een patchwerk zijn neergelegd. Kaysersberg is echt helemaal perfect of het moet het weer zijn want het kan hier behoorlijk regenen.

Hunspach ligt in meest oostelijke punt van Frankrijk tegen Duitsland aan. Het dorp staat vol met witte vakwerkhuizen die opvallend op elkaar lijken. Kennelijk wilde iedereen hier hetzelfde huis. Het plaatsje wordt omringt door weilanden en boomgaarden. In 2020 werd Hunspach gekozen tot Le Village préféré des Français en was daarmee de derde dorp in de Elzas dat deze titel mag voeren.
