Minerve ligt in de Hérault op de plek waar de rivieren Briant en Cesse samenkomen. Het dorp heeft een dramatische geschiedenis. Het landschap is hier ruig met grote hoogte verschillen. Minerve ligt op een rots tussen twee kolven in die door de rivieren gedurende miljoenen jaren zijn uitgesleten waardoor het een spectaculair uitzicht biedt. Niet alleen het landschap is hier dramatisch want gedurende de kruistocht tegen de Katheren vond hier een bloedbad plaats.

Aan het begin van de dertiende eeuw was het zuiden van Frankrijk het toneel van één van de twee kruistochten die in Europa werden gehouden. Hier had een nieuwe interpretatie van het christendom een grote aanhang gevonden en daar was de Paus niet blij mee. Na een aantal poging om de bevolking van de Languedoc via de rede weer terug te krijgen in de ‘moederkerk’ riep de Paus op tot een kruistocht.

De ridders uit het Noorden van Frankrijk gaven hier massaal gehoor aan en in 1209 trok een noordelijk leger naar het zuiden om daar de Katharen mores te leren. En dat is gelukt want met veel geweld werden de Katheren weer in het christelijk gareel geslagen.

Hoewel de kruistocht het een godsdienstig karakter had, was het ook een plundertocht en een poging van de noordelijke ridders hun macht in het rijke zuiden te laten gelden.

De gebeurtenissen van achthonderd jaar geleden heeft een grote invloed gehad op de cultuur van de Languedoc dat eigenlijk nooit de macht uit het noorden heeft willen accepteren. Ook nu nog is Parijs hier heel ver weg. Letterlijk want Amsterdam ligt dichterbij de Franse hoofdstad dan Minerve.

Nadat 1209 Beziers en Carcassone in handen van de kruisvaarders gekomen vonden de heren het wel goed. De buit was binnen en ze marcheerden weer naar het noorden. De weerstand was echter nog niet gebroken en een klein leger onder leiding van de Simon de Monfort bleef achter om de laatste puntjes op de i te zetten.

Minerve was zijn eerste prooi en na een belegering van de vijf weken viel de stad waarna De Monfort alle 180 aanwezige katharen liet doden. Daarmee was de kous nog niet af want de oorlog zou nog negen jaar de Languedoc teisteren.

Nog steeds wordt de herinnering aan deze gebeurtenissen in het dorp levend gehouden. De katharen werden terechtgesteld op het plein voor het gemeentehuis en is duidelijk aangegeven. Ook het kasteel waar de katharen zich hadden verschanst staat in het teken van de strijd in het begin van de dertiende eeuw.

Naast de indrukwekkende geschiedenis heeft Minerve nog twee indrukwekkende attracties. De water van de rivieren heeft zich namelijk door het zandsteen gegeten en heeft zo twee natuurlijke tunnels gevormd. Deze kan je goed te bekijken door langs de oever van de rivier te lopen en dat moet indrukwekkend zijn.
