Lagrasse ligt ten oosten van Carcassonne. Het dorp heeft een prachtige oude abdij, een mooie brug en een interessante markthal. Deze bezienswaardigheden verraden de lange geschiedenis van het schilderachtige dorpje. Het toerisme is hier goed ontwikkeld maar het is er niet zo druk waardoor je de schoonheid niet kan bewonderen.

Lagrasse is een mooi middeleeuws plaatsje dat precies is gebouwd op de kruising van de valleien van de Orbieu en de Alsou. Het landschap is prachtig en in de zomer kan het hier ook behoorlijk warm zijn. Het dorp heeft zich ontwikkeld tot een toeristische attractie en dat heeft zijn voor- en nadelen. Het is al lang geen slaperig dorpje meer waar je kan wegdromen zonder dat je Nederlands hoort. Jammer natuurlijk maar het heeft als voordeel dat er hier voldoende faciliteiten zijn voor redelijk comfortabel bezoek. Zo zijn er genoeg winkeltjes en restaurantjes en is er voldoende parkeergelegenheid die bovendien gratis is.

De geschiedenis van Lagrasse is bijzonder lang. Het dorp komt voor het eerst in de bronnen voor als Karel de Grote met zijn leger door de vallei trekt. Archeologisch opgravingen in de directe omgeving hebben echter aangetoond dat deze plek al in de Romeinse tijd werd bewoond.
Tijdens de renaissance van de twaalfde eeuw kent Lagrasse zijn eerste echte bloeiperiode. De tol die werd geheven op de brug zorgde samen met de abdij Sainte-Marie l’Orbieu ervoor dat het dorp zich ontwikkelde. Er kwamen steeds meer mensen wonen en de bouw van de markthal duidt op de economische functie die Lagrasse in de omgeving had. In de veertiende eeuw maakten de Honderdjarige oorlog en de uitbraak van de pest hier een einde aan.
Toch weet het dorp zich dankzij de ontwikkeling van de lakenhandel te herstellen waarna een nieuwe bloeiperiode ontstaat. Ook hier komt een einde aan en weer zijn het externe factoren de oorzaak van de neergang. De Franse Revolutie zorgt ervoor dat de Abdij wordt opgeheven en dat het gebouw wordt verkocht aan de hoogste bieder. Dat blijkt de doodsteek van voor het dorp dat in de negentiende eeuw bijna compleet leegloopt. Het is uiteindelijke het toerisme in de twintigste eeuw dat ervoor zorgt dat Lagrasse zich voor de derde keer weet te herrijzen.
