La Garde Guérin is een middeleeuws vestingdorp midden in de Cevennen. Het dorp ligt in een ruig berggebied met uitgestrekte vlaktes en steile bergen elkaar afwisselen. La Garde Guérin ligt op een plateau boven de Gorges de Chassezac en dat zorgt voor spectaculaire uitzichten.

La Garde Guérin heeft een iets andere bestaansgeschiedenis als de meeste Beaux villages. Hier is geen klooster of kasteelheer waar omheen het dorp is ontstaan maar struikrovers en bandieten die de oorzaak zijn voor het stichten van deze nederzetting. Hoe zit het? La Garde Guérin ligt op de oude Romeinse weg tussen de Middellandse Zee en de Auvergne. Deze route werd lang nadat het Romeinse Rijk was gevallen nog gebruikt en dat was het werkterrein van bendes struikrovers die het verkeer terroriseerden.

In de twaalfde eeuw vond de Bisschop van Mende het genoeg en besloot tot een het oprichten van een permanent legertje die de weg zou bewaken. De opgetrommelde mannen bouwden La Garde Guérin als uitvalsbasis waar iedere ruiter een huisje kreeg. De gebruikers van de weg diende voor hun veiligheid wel tol te betalen en zo bleef het gebruik van de weg geld kosten. Een gewoonte die in Frankrijk nog altijd zeer gebruikelijk is.
De verdedigingsmuur van het dorp zijn nog altijd goed te herkennen en de meest zichtbare zijn de overblijfselen van de burcht waarvan een toren en nog wat andere gebouwen overeind staan. Aangezien het dorp op een strategische plaats is gebouwd heb je een prachtig uitzicht op de omgeving die redelijk spectaculair is. Een bordje bij de burcht wijst je de weg naar een plek met nog mooier uitzicht op 15 minuten lopen.
