Sainte-Énimie ligt ten zuidwesten van Mende en iets ten westen van Florac langs de oever van de Tarn. De rivier heeft zich in de loop van miljoenen jaren door de rotsen gegraven en zo is er een prachtig gorges ontstaan. Het dorp is gebouwd rondom twee kloosters die in de tiende eeuw zijn gesticht.

Over de ontstaansgeschiedenis van Sainte Énimie bestaat een mooie legende die door de troubadours in de late middeleeuwen aan de hoven van Europa werden verteld. Het dorp zou genoemd naar de dochter van Colvis II, een koning van de Merovingers in de zevende eeuw. Deze Énimie wilde een vroom leven leiden maar dat was voor een meisje van adel natuurlijk niet de bedoeling.

Trouwen en kinderen krijgen zou ze. Om dit onmogelijk te maken bad ze tot God om haar onhuwbaar te maken. Het opperwezen had hier blijkbaar wel oren naar en korte tijd later kreeg het meisje lepra. Zij werd naar de plek gestuurd waar nu het dorp ligt om te genezen en waar ze zowaar snel opknapte. Weer helemaal fit wordt ze dan toch snel uitgehuwelijkt waarna de ziekte weer spontaan terugkeert. Opnieuw wordt ze naar de plek lang de Tarn gestuurd en opnieuw geneest ze snel. Dit herhaald zich een paar keer waarna de koning tot de conclusie komt dat zijn dochter beter haar leven aan God kan wijden. En zo geschiedde. Éminie werd een non en twee eeuwen later werden hier twee kloosters gebouwd, één voor mannen en één voor vrouwen.

Van deze kloosters staan nu nog een paar gebouwen en die zijn te bezoeken. Het complex werd tijdens de Franse Revolutie flink beschadigd maar er is nog voldoende te zien. Naast de resten van de kloosters is het dorpje zelf ook leuk om te wandelen.

Het dorp daarbij is goed ingericht voor het toerisme zo zijn er verschillende campings, restaurants en hotels. Je kan hier dus prima terecht voor eten of een slaapplek. De rivier kan worden bevaren met een kano, een activiteit waar wij dol op zijn. Maar je kan er ook uitstekend wandelen, klimmen, fietsen en gewoon lekker zwemmen.
