Saint Benoît du Sault is een prachtig dorp dat de schoonheid van een ‘Plus Beaux Village’ combineert met de charme van de Franse slag. Het dorp in de Indre valt echt niet uit elkaar, maar hier en daar zie je wel dat de tijd zijn invloed heeft op de bebouwing. Helaas bezochten we het dorp op doorreis en moesten we na een half uur weer verder. Daarom slechts twee sterren, voorlopig althans.

Saint Benoît du Sault ligt op een steenworp van de autoroute A20 tussen Châteauroux en Limoges. Een perfecte afstand vanaf Nederland voor een lange tussenstop als je verder naar het zuiden op weg bent. Dat is een stuk beter dan een overbevolkte aire al kost het je wel een uurtje.

Voordat we het dorp bezochten zijn we al zeker zeven keer voorbij de afslag gereden waar het dorp wordt aangekondigd. Ik had nooit goed bekeken hoe ver het van de snelweg lag, waardoor ik niet kon inschatten hoeveel tijd een kort bezoek zou kosten. Op een goede dag in mei reden we uit de Cantal terug naar Nederland weer langs de aankondiging van de afslag. We keken elkaar even aan en ik zette het knipperlicht aan.

Na tweeënhalve kilometer met de richtingaanwijzer aan over de autoroute te hebben gereden, nam ik de afslag. De kinderen achterin begonnen zich ondertussen af te vragen of vaders nog wel in staat was om de bolide goed te besturen.

Prachtig Frans dorp

Saint Benoît du Sault heeft genoeg winkels, een bakker en een slager, voor een eenvoudige lunch. Als je uit eten wilt kan dat natuurlijk ook. Volgens de groene gids is er ook een betaalbare Chambre d’hotes. Je kan er dus eventueel ook een nachtje slapen.

Het dorp ligt in een bocht van de rivier Portefeuille, waardoor het eigenlijk op een schiereiland in de rivier ligt. Een goede strategische ligging dus en dat doet vermoeden dat de Romeinen hier zijn geweest. En dat klopt, want de Romeinen stichtten hier een nederzetting genaamd Salis.

Handel in het dorp

In de tiende eeuw werd hier door de Benedictijner monniken een priorij gesticht. Deze heilige was in die tijd enorm populair waardoor het hele plaatsje

maar naar hem werd vernoemd. In de vijftiende eeuw kreeg Saint Benoît de economische wind mee, wat de bouwlust behoorlijk stimuleerde. Al snel werd het een regionaal handelscentrum met internationale allure. Dat kan je tenminste concluderen uit het feit dat er in die tijd een heuse Portugese wijk werd gebouwd waar nu nog de straatnamen aan doen herinneren.

De straatjes in het centrum zijn charmant en heerlijk Frans. Voor de huizen staan bloempotten waardoor de hele boel een vrolijk karakter krijgt. De bewoners maken er echt iets van. De kerk stamt uit de elfde eeuw en is in de veertiende eeuw behoorlijk verbouwd. Verder is hij niet bijzonder. Dat kan je wel zeggen van het uitzicht vanaf het terras voor de kerk. Dat is ook de perfecte plek om een stokbroodje te eten met het liefst een le Pouligny-Saint-Pierre, een geitenkaasje uit de Brenne, een streek die vlakbij het dorp ligt. Maar een goede Camembert mag natuurlijk ook. Onze favoriet uit het standaardassortiment is ‘La Rustique‘, want die heeft de meeste smaak. Maar er zijn er natuurlijk die nog lekkerder zijn, maar die zijn ook duurder en lang niet overal te krijgen.

In de omgeving

Wij zijn na ons bezoek direct de A20 weer opgedoken en richting Hazeldonk gereden. Het mooie dorp ligt in zo’n typische streek in Frankrijk waar je voorbij rijdt op weg naar het zuiden. Dat is eigenlijk jammer want de streek is buitengewoon mooi en je kan er buitengewoon lekker eten. In de directe omgeving van Saint Benoît du Sault ligt het dal van de Anglin en die van Abloux met flink wat kastelen.

Ten noorden van het dorp ligt het Jardin des Merveilles, een botanische tuin met meer dan 4.000 planten. Nog iets noordelijker en je rijdt het Parc naturel régional de la Brenne in dat bekend is om zijn duizenden meren, in Frankrijk dan. Het gebied is prima te ontdekken op een mountainbike of een gewone fiets. Iets verder ligt het kasteel van Valencay. Genoeg te doen om hier een weekje de boel te verkennen en dat gaan we dan ook binnenkort doen. Het staat op onze bucket list!
