Rochechouart is een kleine stoere stad gelegen in het Franse departement de Haute-Vienne. Elke keer als ik deze stad binnen rij beneemt mij de blik op het chateau dat hoog boven de omgeving uittorent de adem. De twee torens zijn dominant aanwezig, schapen grazen op de heuvel onder het kasteel en de rustig kabbelende rivier maakt het plaatje compleet.

Treignac-sur-Vézère ligt zoals de naam aangeeft aan de rivier Vézère aan de voet van het kleine gebergte Les Monédières. Het landschap is gemoedelijk met bossen en kleine riviertjes en nodigt uit om heerlijk buiten te zijn. Het dorp heeft een prachtige bovenstad, een oude brug en interessant kerkje.

Ségur-le-Château ligt in het zuiden van de Limousin op een soort schiereiland langs de Auvézère. Deze plek langs de rivier wordt gedomineerd door twee heuvels met steile hellingen. Op één daarvan is er in de twaalfde eeuw een kasteel gebouwd met dubbele muren, maar die is in een ruïne vervallen. Vervallen gebouwen zijn in Frankrijk vaak mooi en dus dat is helemaal niet erg.

Saint-Robert ligt in het prachtige landschap op de grens van de Perigord, Limousin en de Quercy. Het dorp wordt gedomineerd door de grote abdijkerk waar omheen is gebouwd. Sinds 1972 wordt er in de kerk elke zomer een festival voor klassieke muziek gehouden dat inmiddels een zeer goede reputatie heeft opgebouwd. Het moet een unieke ervaring zijn om in de kerk uit de twaalfde eeuw een concert bij te wonen.

Gargilesse-Dampierre ligt op dik twee uur rijden ten zuiden van Parijs vlak naast de snelweg A20. Het dorp ligt prachtig op de oever van de rivier Gargilesse en trekt door haar schoonheid nog altijd kunstenaars aan. Het heeft een eigen museum en een kerk met verrassend gave fresco’s uit de dertiende eeuw.

De regio Limousin ligt in het hart van Frankrijk en is niet zo heel bekend bij Nederlanders. De hoofdstad Limoges is voor veel mensen niet veel meer dan het teken dat de Dordogne niet heel erg ver meer is en de kans op een dikke file (bouchon). En zoals je kunt verwachten schrijf ik hier dat het onterecht is en dat de Limousin de moeite waard is om vakantie te vieren. Dat is ook wel zo maar dit geldt niet voor iedereen want de regio is voor de één aantrekkelijker dan voor een ander. Hou je van drukte, een luxe camping en wil je geen Frans spreken, rij dan lekker door naar de Dordogne en daar is natuurlijk ook niets mis mee.

Op een klein half uur rijden van Limoges ligt Oradour-sur-Glane. Het dorpje is een adembenemend monument van de gruwelijkheden die tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog zijn gepleegd. Het dorp werd door een SS eenheid verwoest waarna er onder de bewoners een bloedbad werd aangericht. Vlak na de oorlog bezocht De Gaulle Oradour en besloot dat het dorp moest blijven zoals de Duitsers het hadden achtergelaten, en zo is het nog steeds.

Mortemart ligt in de Limousin aan de voet van de Monts Blond en is eigenlijk een dorp waar je zo doorheen rijdt. Dat deden wij ook bijna, maar ik wist toch de rem op tijd te vinden. Het dorp heeft een bewogen geschiedenis waar niet heel veel meer van te vinden is. De kerk is nog wel de moeite waard.

Turenne is een bijzonder dorp in de streek Corrèze in de buurt van de Dordogne. Het dorp is gebouwd op een berg waar een machtige ruïne staat. Deze was ooit van militaire waarde maar nu is het een leuke attractie voor toeristen. Daarnaast is een aardig kerkje waar vooral het interieur interessant is.

Saint Benoît du Sault is een prachtig dorp dat de schoonheid van een ‘Plus Beaux Village’ combineert met de charme van de Franse slag. Het dorp in de Indre valt echt niet uit elkaar, maar hier en daar zie je wel dat de tijd zijn invloed heeft op de bebouwing. Helaas bezochten we het dorp op doorreis en moesten we na een half uur weer verder. Daarom slechts twee sterren, voorlopig althans.
