Ségur-le-Château ligt in het zuiden van de Limousin op een soort schiereiland langs de Auvézère. Deze plek langs de rivier wordt gedomineerd door twee heuvels met steile hellingen. Op één daarvan is er in de twaalfde eeuw een kasteel gebouwd met dubbele muren, maar die is in een ruïne vervallen. Vervallen gebouwen zijn in Frankrijk vaak mooi en dus dat is helemaal niet erg.

In tegenstelling tot veel dorpen markeert de bouw van het kasteel niet de hoogtij dagen van het dorp want die kwam later. Vanaf de late middeleeuwen tot halverwege de achttiende eeuw zetelde hier één van de belangrijkste gerechtshoven van de Limousin.

Dit gaf het dorp niet alleen aanzien maar ook een flinke economische duw in de rug. Aangezien de forens nog niet was uitgevonden lieten de rechters en andere juristen hun huizen in Ségur le Chateau bouwen. Het dorp staat vol met prachtige herenhuizen van deze magistraten en dat maakt een wandeling door de kronkelige straatjes zeer aangenaam.
