Capdenac ligt in het zuiden van Frankrijk even ten zuiden van Figeac hoog boven de rivier de Lot. Het dorp heeft een lange geschiedenis die terug gaat tot de oudheid maar het speelde vooral in de middeleeuwen een belangrijke rol in de regio. De grote Donjon uit die tijd domineert nog altijd het aanzien van het plaatsje maar er zijn hier ook Romeinse zaken te ontdekken.

Het dorp gaat nu door het leven als Capdenac-le-Haut maar dat is een toevoeging om verschil te maken met Capdenac-le-Gare, dat beneden aan de andere kant van de rivier ligt. Deze kleine stad is veel minder oud en beschikt zoals de naam al doet vermoeden over een treinstation dat het knooppunt vormt tussen vijf spoorlijnen naar Cahors, Toulouse, Brive, Aurillac en Rodez. Het staat in de treinwereld bekend als de ster van Capdenac maar dat is meer een verhaal voor Railaway.

De rivier De Lot vormt hier de grens van het departement en daarom ligt het dorp in het departement de Lot en het stadje in de Aveyron. Vanaf Capdenac-le-Haut heb je een prachtig uitzicht op het stadje en het treincomplex is van boven leuk om te bekijken.

De rol van Capdenac in de geschiedenis is lang onderwerp van discussie geweest. Dat er hier in de prehistorie al mensen woonden is duidelijk want daar zijn resten van gevonden. Maar hier zou Uxellodunum hebben gelegen, een Gallische bolwerk in de tijd van de Romeinse verovering. Dit dorp zou dankzij haar strategische ligging de laatste verzetshaard zijn geweest tegen de veroveringsdrift van Ceasar. Omdat de Galliërs in Frankrijk worden beschouwd als de voorouders van de natie, wat redelijke onzin is natuurlijk, zou dit een belangrijke plek voor Frankrijk zijn.

Julius Ceasar

De beroemde Romein besteedt uitgebreid aandacht aan het beleg in zijn beroemde boek Commentarii de bello Gallico (De Gallische oorlog). Het zal niemand verbazen dat de Romeinen korte metten met de opstand maken en dat Ceasar hierbij een hoofdrol speelt. Hoewel de opstand eigenlijk al onder controle is snelt de veldheer vanuit het noorden te hulp, snijdt de waterafvoer van de Galliers af waarna deze zich overgaven.

Om er zeker van te zijn dat ze niet meer de wapens zouden opnemen tegen Rome worden de handen van alle mannen afgehakt. Hiermee laat Ceasar zien dat hij niet alleen heel slim is en dat hij hard optreedt tegen de vijanden van Rome.

Romeinse bron

Helaas voor Capdenac bleek na uitgebreid archeologische onderzoek dat de beroemde Gallische burcht verder in het westen bij de Dordogne heeft gelegen. Hier dus niet maar dat wil nog niet zeggen dat hier in de late oudheid niet bewoond was. Eén van de attracties van het dorp is een Romeinse bron in de steile rots boven de rivier de Lot.

Maar verder zijn er niet heel veel zaken die herinneren aan de oudheid. Dankzij de strategische ligging is de plek voortdurend bewoond geweest waardoor er weinig over is van de Romeinse tijd. Het zijn het de middeleeuwen die het aanzien van het dorp bepalen en dat is helemaal niet erg.

Tijdens ons bezoek op een late middag in juli was het niet druk. Naast een schoolklas met jonge pubers stonden er een paar auto’s en een camper op de parkeerplaats. Terwijl de tieners verveeld in de speeltuin hingen liepen wij het dorp in.

Twee kleine poorten

Bij de entree van het dorp werd onze aandacht direct getrokken door twee poorten aan onze linker hand. De grote donjon aan de rechterzijde viel ons in eerste instantie niet eens op. De eerste poort moet een onderdeel zijn geweest van de verdedigingsmuur want het staat compleet los van alles. Toch loont het wel de moeite om er even door te lopen, je hebt hier namelijk voor het eerst het prachtige uitzicht op de rivier en het dal.

Mooie straatjes en steegjes

Achter de tweede poort begint een fijn mooi straatje met oude huizen en die zijn we ook maar ingelopen. Uiteindelijk kwamen we terecht op een groot terras waar opnieuw kan worden genoten van het prachtige uitzicht op de rivier en het dal.

Maar hier is nog iets bijzonders te zien want onder het terras bevindt zich een waterbron die al door de Romeinen werd gebruikt. Het heeft de naam dat Julius Ceasar de bron als eerste gebruikte maar omdat er geen bronnen zijn die deze claim ondersteunen lijkt dat toch wat ver gezocht.

Om de bron te bekijken moet je een steile trap nemen die je naar beneden voert. Ik had wel zin om deze bron te zien maar helaas was hij gesloten. Meestal komt dat omdat we tijdens lunch een dorp bezoeken, we zijn toch Nederlanders, maar dit keer waren we daar keurig in de namiddag.

Enigszins teleurgesteld liepen we het dorp weer in waar we enigszins verdwaalden in de leuke straatjes. Nu is het ook niet heel moeilijk want het dorp is niet zo heel groot en we stonden plots op het plein met de donjon.

Elf belegeringen

De Donjon is het meest opvallende onderdeel van de burcht die een belangrijke rol heeft gespeeld in de geschiedenis van het dorp. Vanwege zijn strategische ligging, het ligt precies op de enige weg tussen de Quercy en het zuiden, is het dorp meer dan eens onderdeel van strijd geweest.

Capdenac is maar liefst elf keer belegerd. In de achtste eeuw veroverde Pepijn de Korte, vreemd genoeg de vader van Karel de Grote, de vesting al. In de dertiende eeuw tijdens de kruistochten tegen de Katharen werd het twee keer veroverd door Simon van Montfort. Een eeuw laten waren het de Engelsen die tijdens de Honderdjarige Oorlog het dorp belegerden. Tot slot was het dorp tijdens de godsdienstoorlogen in de zestiende eeuw een belangrijk protestant bolwerk.

Bij het donjon bleek een middeleeuwse tuin te zijn is het is best leuk om deze even te bekijken. Er staan allerlei planten en kruiden keurig in perkjes. De picknicktafel maakt het een ideale plek om even wat te nuttigen dat ook werd gedaan door een Frans gezinnetje. We hebben ze maar verder niet gestoord.
