Iets ten zuiden van Rouen ligt Le Bec-Hellouin dat is gebouwd naast een Benedictijns klooster. De abdij werd in de elfde eeuw gesticht door ene Hellouin, die zowel ridder als monnik was. Een combinatie die op ons nu raar overkomt, maar in die tijd kwam dit wel meer voor. Het klooster staat er nog, of beter gezegd weer. Het werd in de veertiende eeuw, tijdens de Honderdjarige oorlog tussen Engeland en Frankrijk, verwoest en later weer opgebouwd.

Het klooster en de kerk werden in het verleden meerdere malen geplunderd. Pas na de Tweede Wereldoorlog, waarin de gebouwen voor de laatste keer werden gemolesteerd, werden ze weer hersteld. Ook de monniken keerden in 1948 terug, waarmee het klooster weer zijn oude functie terugkreeg.

De gevolgen van deze ruige geschiedenis zijn nog te vinden in het park van de abdij. Het park is volledig ommuurd en is zo te zien in bezit van het klooster maar is gewoon open voor het publiek. Onder de hoge bomen, die dienen als een lommerrijke parasol, is het goed uit te houden. Dit is kortom de perfecte plek om lekker uit te rusten en te genieten van een stokbroodje met Camembert, dat hier niet zo gek ver vandaan ligt. Daarbij moet je wel in ander dorp inkopen doen want ik heb geen bakker of epicerie kunnen ontdekken in Le Bec-Hellouin.

Tussen de bomen staat een brute toren die meer doet denken aan een burcht, dan aan een klooster. Opvallend is de zeer stevige basis van het bouwsel terwijl de bovenkant toch aardig versiert is met Gotische elementen. De stevigheid van de toren heeft alles te maken met het gewelddadige verleden. De abdij werd bevolkt door Benedictijners die vanaf de stichting in de eerste helft van de elfde eeuw werd gesteund door de Normandische hertogen. Dat waren toen behoorlijke eindbazen die in dezelfde eeuw nog Engeland veroverden.

In de veertiende eeuw teisterde de Honderdjarige oorlog tussen de Engeland en Frankrijk het platteland.  De Benedictijners in Le Bec-Hellouin zagen de bui al hangen en besloten daarom het klooster flink te versterken. Het mocht echter niet baten want de abdij viel uiteindelijk toch ten prooi aan de plunderende Engelse legers die het met de grond gelijk maakten.

Toren Saint Nicolas

De toren die er nu staat is echter jonger, uit de zeventiende eeuw om precies te zijn. Hij is gewijd aan Sinterklaas, niet alleen in Frankrijk een populaire heilige, en deed oorspronkelijke dienst als klokkentoren. Dat de toren is gebouwd als een vesting heeft alles te maken met de godsdienstoorlogen. De kerk staat er niet meer, maar er zijn nog wel enkele stenen en omgevallen muurtjes te zien en ook het grondplan van het gebouw is nog goed te herkennen. Het klooster overleefde deze roerige tijden.

Aan het einde van achttiende eeuw was het uit met de rust. De monniken werden na de Franse Revolutie weggejaagd waarna het complex door het leger in gebruik werd genomen als opslagplaats voor paarden en voertuigen.

Hieraan kwam pas een einde na de Franse nederlaag tegen Duitsland in 1940. In de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd het plan al opgepakt om het gebouw zijn oorspronkelijke functie terug te geven. Hiervoor waren ook monniken nodig en die werden gevonden in Cormeilles-en-Parisis, waar de plaatselijke benedictijner orde bereid was een aantal geestelijke af te staan om hier te gaan wonen. De boel werd weer hersteld en in 1948 trokken de monniken weer in het complex en sindsdien is het klooster weer in functie. Naast dit klooster bevindt zich vlakbij het dorp ook nog een nonnenklooster.

Aardewerk

Nu is het mogelijk om het klooster te bezoeken maar omdat wij op doorreis waren hebben we dit niet gedaan. Vrienden van ons hebben dit wel gedaan en die gaven aan dat een bezoekje aan de abdij de moeite waard is. Er is in ieder geval een mooie bibliotheek en een pottenbakkerij waar je kan zien hoe ze daar ambachtelijk aardewerk, Faïences genaamd, wordt gemaakt.

De abdij heeft een belangrijke rol gespeeld in de geschiedenis van het dorp dat er letterlijk tegenaan is gebouwd. De vele vakwerkhuizen zijn gebouwd in gezellige straatjes die bij ons bezoek voor een groot deel open lagen, ze kregen nieuwe bestrating. Opvallend is dat de huizen in het centrum zijn gebouwd rondom een grasveld waar ook de kerk staat. Dit zie je niet zo veel in Frankrijk en deed mij een beetje denken hoe sommige Nederlandse dorpen rondom een brink zijn gebouwd.

Helaas vonden de Fransen het ook nodig om hier een groot modern dorpshuis te bouwen waar naast de Office du Tourisme ook een soort van kunstgallery een plek heeft gevonden. Mocht je op doortocht zijn; aan de achterkant van dit gebouw bevindt zich een beetje verscholen een uitstekend openbaar toilet inclusief handdoek, dat is toch informatie die goud waard kan zijn.

Uitstekende stopplaats

Le Bec-Hellouin leent zich uitstekend als stopplaats tijdens een rit naar bijvoorbeeld Bretagne. Het ligt maar een paar kilometer vanaf de Auto-route A-28 richting Le Mans. Het kost je iets meer tijd dan een Auto-Grill maar je stapt dan ook een stuk rustiger de auto weer in. Als je wilt picknicken moet je wel even in een ander dorpje shoppen, maar het dorp kent ook een aantal leuke restaurantjes waar bij ons bezoek heerlijke geuren vandaan kwamen. Een nachtje slapen is ook een uitstekend plan en dat kan in een herberg of op de kleine camping. Je wordt ongetwijfeld heel lekker wakker en dan kan je  heerlijk relaxed naar het zuiden af zakken.
