Abdijen genoeg in Frankrijk maar die van Jumièges in Normandië is toch een beetje anders dan de rest en dat heeft vooral te maken met de staat waarin het zich bevindt; het is een ruïne en een mooie ook.

Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire was in de middeleeuwen twee eeuwen lang één van de toonaangevende cultuurcentra in Frankrijk en daarmee in West-Europa. Hier stond een machtig klooster met een bibliotheek met een enorme collectie met de mooiste boeken van de wereld en misschien wel de mooiste die ooit zijn gemaakt.

Le Cairn de Barnenez is een grafmonument in het noorden van Bretagne en ligt bijzonder fraai aan de baai van Morlaix. Het oudste gedeelte is meer dan 6850 jaar geleden gebouwd en is daarmee het oudste gebouw in de wereld.

Aan de oever van een meertje midden in het oerbos van Bretagne ligt Huelgoat. Het dorp is het perfecte begin- en eind punt van veel mooie wandeltochten. De eettentjes nodigen je na een flinke wandeltocht vanzelf uit om de vermoeide voeten even te laten rusten onder het genot van een drankje of hapje.

Cassel werd in 2018 gekozen door het Franse publiek gekozen tot het mooiste dorp van Frankrijk. Dat was natuurlijk voor ons een reden om eens een kijkje te nemen. Het dorp Fontaine-de-Vaucluse gaf ooit zijn naam aan de hele streek en ligt even ten oosten van Avignon. Deze plek wordt al heel lang bewoond. Het snelle water van de rivier de Sorgue en de spectaculaire manier waarop dit even buiten het dorp boven de grond komt heeft altijd mensen getrokken. Francesco Petrarca is de beroemdste inwoner en het huis van deze dichter is dan ook te bezoeken. Toch was dit dorp nog niet zo heel lang geleden compleet verlaten en is het aan de opkomst van het toerisme dat het opnieuw is opgebouwd.

In het departement Aude in de Languedoc ligt boven op een heuvel het dorpje Rennes-le-Château. Deze plek was al bewoond in de tijd van de Visigothen en was toen zelfs een belangrijke plaats maar dat is nu moeilijk voor te stellen, het dorpje heeft amper 100 inwoners. Toch is deze plek in heel Frankrijk en zelfs daarbuiten bekend maar dat heeft te maken met de priester die hier aan het einde van de negentiende eeuw op een mysterieuze wijze plots over een enorm vermogen beschikte.

Le Vieil-Armand, of Hartmannswillerkopf, is een berg in het zuiden van de Elzas met een geschiedenis. De berg ten noorden van Mulhouse is meer dan 950 meter hoog en steekt vanaf de Vogezen het dal van de Rijn in. In de Eerste Wereldoorlog vonden hier bloedige gevechten plaats die, het zal je niet verbazen, tot niets meer leidden dan heel veel doden en andere ellende. Om deze nutteloze slachting te herdenken is hier een indrukwekkend monument gebouwd met een militaire erebegraafplaats. Het is één van de nationale herdenkingsplaatsen van de Eerste Wereldoorlog van Frankrijk.
