Zoals de naam al doet vermoeden ligt Lyons-la-Forêst midden in een bos. Het dorp is bekend om zijn fraaie zeventiende-eeuwse huizen, waarvan er nog er veel in een uitstekende staat zijn. De geschiedenis van het dorp is echter ouder. In de dertiende eeuw was het zelfs een zeer belangrijke plaats, omdat de Engelse koning, die ook hertog van Normandië was, hier vaak verbleef.

We hebben Lyons-la-Forêst bezocht toen wij onderweg waren naar Giverny waar het huis van Monet staat, een aanrader trouwens. Misschien was de indruk die het huis en vooral de tuin van Monet op ons maakten later op die dag wel zo groot dat Lyons-la-Forêst een beetje in het niet viel.

Natuurlijk is het een prachtig dorp en zeker het bos erom heen is echt prachtig. Je zou je hier ook best een aantal dagen kunnen vermaken. Voor als een fiets bij je hebt en een beetje van natuur houdt dan is het dorp een uitstekende uitvalbasis.

Het dorp zelf heeft ook genoeg te bieden met een gezellig plein met voldoende terrassen zodat een lekker hapje eten tot de mogelijkheden behoren. Ook de aanwezigheid van een Office de Toursime is handig voor als je hier in buurt verblijft.

Hendrik I, de vierde zoon van Willem de Veroveraar, stierf hier in een kasteel. Ook de beroemde Engelse koning Richard Leeuwenhart woonde hier een tijdje na zijn kruistocht. In de middeleeuwen was dit deel van Frankrijk meer Engels dan Frans vanwege een uit de hand gelopen familieruzie over wie er op de troon zou moeten zitten.

Dat is het nu niet meer natuurlijk want de Engelsen werden gedurende de vijftiende eeuw bijna uit geheel Frankrijk en nu zijn de twee naties al meer dan honderd jaar goede vrienden. Naast de mooie vakwerkhuizen staat er in Lyons-la-Forêst ook een aardige kerk. Deze heet net als de eerste gotisch kathedraal Saint Denis en is de moeite waard om even te bezoeken.

De markthal in het centrum is een fraai stukje houtskeletbouw, je kan er mooi onder lopen en als je op de fiets bent kan je hier goed schuilen. Een Nederlands stel met hun kroost in een aanhanger achter hun fiets kwam dat ook doen. De kinderen hadden geen last van de hoosbui en sliepen lekker door in comfortabele onderkomen op wielen.

Daarnaast staat er het dorp nog een mooi stadhuis dat open is voor publiek. Hier zijn naast een prachtige vergaderzaal ook kerkers te zien. Tot slot staan hier de huizen van beroemde inwoners van het dorp waarvan de componist Maurice Ravel, die van de Balero, de bekendste is.

Toen het even droog was hebben we een kleine wandeling gemaakt door het dorp volgde een bezoekje aan de bakker. Het weer bleef echter slecht en we besloten de auto weer op te zoeken en richting Giverny te rijden.
