In het zuiden van Normandië, aan de oevers van de rivier de Sarthe, ligt Saint Céneri le Gérei. Het dorp is ontstaan op de plek waar een oude Italiaanse kluizenaar zich in de zevende eeuw vestigde. En in die tijd werd je dan al snel heilig: Saint Céneri dus. Er werd vlot een klooster gebouwd dat helaas al in de middeleeuwen werd verwoest, door Vikingen in de tiende eeuw al.

Het dorp zelf is er nog en ligt prachtig in een bocht van de rivier. In Saint Céneri vind je mooie oude huizen met de onvermijdelijke kerk. Die laatste komt uit de elfde eeuw en binnen zijn er nog grote fraaie fresco’s uit de veertiende eeuw te zien, toen was Amsterdam niet veel meer dan een vissersdorpje. Buiten het dorp staat trouwens ook een interessante kapel uit de vijftiende eeuw.

Over schilderen gesproken; de schoonheid van het dorp trok in het verleden veel kunstenaars, zoals de schilders Corot en Courbet. Je kan het dorp dus tegen komen op een schilderij in een museum. Hoewel klein heeft het dorp wel een eigen museum. De herberg van de zusters Moisy waar vroeger de kunstenaars elkaar ontmoetten en hun glasje dronken is nu een museum met schilderijen uit de negentiende- en twintigste eeuw.

Ook de brug over de Sarthe is een interessant bouwwerk en vormt een prima vertrekpunt voor een fijne wandeling door de omgeving van het dorp. Bij terugkomst kan je je laven aan de Camembert want deze beroemdste Franse Kaas komt oorspronkelijk uit deze regio. Daarbij drink je natuurlijk geen wijn, maar appelcider uit de streek. Ondanks dat het dorp klein is heeft genoeg restaurants dus er is genoeg keuze.
