Le Touquet-Paris-Plage. Met zo’n naam krijg je vanzelf zin dit stadje te bezoeken. Parijs in de zomer, maar dan zonder de stank, de hitte en de toeristen, wie wil dat nou niet? Zee en strand en frisse lucht compenseren het gemis aan musea en monumenten ruimschoots.

Le Touquet Paris-Plage verrees in de loop van de negentiende eeuw en werd een mondain plaatsje. Het ligt aan de Côte d’Opale, in het noorden van Frankrijk, dat deel dat de rest van de Fransozen tegenwoordig met afschuw bekijken (koud! nat! ver weg van alles!). Veel Parijzenaars bouwden er eind negentiende en begin twintigste eeuw sjieke optrekjes (de hoofdstad ligt 250 kilometer verderop), en ook veel Britten.

Die laatsten kwamen in het kielzog van een Britse zakenman met een grote liefde voor the continent én het strandleven. Dat kwam in de loop van de negentiende eeuw op in West-Europa. Tot die tijd waren stranden saai en nat, en je werd er maar vies.

Follies

Aan bouwvoorschriften deden ze nog niet begin vorige eeuw , dus vind je in Le Touquet aardig wat follies. Rare bouwsels, een beetje romantisch, zodat een dame uit de gegoede kringen lekker weg kon dromen in een kasteelachtig optrekje. Alles aan ruime lanen, heel aangenaam. Twee casino’s zijn er, en een paar reusachtige hotels. Wij bezochten vooral de winkelstraat die richting zee gaat.

Sjieke restaurants en crèperies, ramsjachtige toeristenwinkeltjes en haute couture-bonbons, van alles zit er. Plezierig druk was het, en op het strand staat een reusachtige waterpark met enorme glijbanen. Ook bij minder weer kun je toch genieten van iets wat op de zee lijkt, zal het idee zijn geweest.

De sjieke Fransjes komen nog steeds in Le Touquet-Paris-Plage, voor tussendoorvakantietjes. Een weekje uitwaaien en dan op stap voor het echte werk: drie weken naar Corsica, of naar Thailand. Een beetje vergane glorie is het wel. Ook heel charmant. En je zit niet zo in de drukte!

Wandelen

Wij bereikten Le Touquet te voet, vanuit Sainte-Cécile Plage. Dat ligt iets noordelijker. We liepen over het strand bij eb, het was eindeloos breed en het licht bleek en intens tegelijk. Her en der lag nog een bunker sloom te verzinken. Even overwogen we de monding van de rivier de Canche te doorwaden, die op het drooggevallen strand een simpel stroompje leek. Het zou ons de omweg landinwaarts over de brug bij Étaples schelen, minstens twee uur extra.

Maar we durfden het niet – de vloed kan hier snel opkomen en misschien raakten we dan ingesloten door het water. Dus liepen we langs de monding stroomopwaarts (een natuurpark trouwens), eerst door de glupsende modder, later op droger terrein. Daar leerden we van een hulpvaardige plukker welke delen van zeekraal je het best kunt eten. Hij was al een paar uur bezig zijn rieten mandje te vullen. Even verderop gaven twee dames ons hun boeketjes lila de mer (lamsoor) cadeau.

Die groeien in grote zacht-paarse velden. Een beetje de lavendel van de kust, net zo mooi, maar dan geurloos. Met hulp van familie die zo goed was om ons met de auto op te pikken een eind verderop, raakten we toch snel in Le Touquet.

Maar goed ook, zo bleek. Die bedding van de Canche is hartstikke verraderlijk, met sables mouvants. Drijfzand dus. Zijn wij even blij dat we deze tocht hebben overleefd!
