In het departement Aude in de Languedoc ligt boven op een heuvel het dorpje Rennes-le-Château. Deze plek was al bewoond in de tijd van de Visigothen en was toen zelfs een belangrijke plaats maar dat is nu moeilijk voor te stellen, het dorpje heeft amper 100 inwoners. Toch is deze plek in heel Frankrijk en zelfs daarbuiten bekend maar dat heeft te maken met de priester die hier aan het einde van de negentiende eeuw op een mysterieuze wijze plots over een enorm vermogen beschikte.

Mede om je kinderen te laten zien – en het liefst ook te laten voelen – hoe hier in 1944 duizenden doodsbange jonge mannen uit verre buitenlanden stierven voor onze vrijheid. En dan wil je dat ze ernstig knikken.

Le Touquet-Paris-Plage. Met zo’n naam krijg je vanzelf zin dit stadje te bezoeken. Parijs in de zomer, maar dan zonder de stank, de hitte en de toeristen, wie wil dat nou niet? Zee en strand en frisse lucht compenseren het gemis aan musea en monumenten ruimschoots.

Sainte-Cécile ligt aan de Côte Opale, de opalen kust, in het noord-noord-noordelijkste stukje van Frankrijk. Even hard niezen en je bent weer in België. De Guide Michelin zwijgt het plaatsje dood. Veel toeristen komen er dus niet, wel aardig wat Fransjes die er een tweede huis hebben. Tieners zoeken vergeefs naar een disco, een volwaardige boekwinkel is er evenmin. Ook voor fraaie historische bouwsels moet je elders zijn.

Er moet heel wat gebeuren in de boze buitenwereld wil de impact ervan doordringen in het lieflijke dorpje Axat, aan de voet van de Pyreneeën. De ongeveer 900 inwoners bewegen zich bij voorkeur slenterend door de paar smalle straatjes, goedmoedig ‘bonjour’ zeggend tegen de toeristen, die hier doorgaans van het prettige slag zijn. Dus geen lawaaimakende zonzoekers maar natuurliefhebbers die komen wandelen, kanoën of klimmen.
Mijn dochter en ik waren er in de zomer van 2014 twee van.

Een roodharige provinciegenoot van zo’n vier generaties geleden. Balancerend op het snijvlak van genialiteit en gekte. Bipolariteit is de diagnose die ze nu zouden stellen.
Ik was hem al weer bijna vergeten tot onze vakantie van 2008. Na jaren op verre vakanties te zijn geweest, gingen we –met ons pasgeboren dochter- weer op pad naar La douce France. De Provence was ons reisdoel. Net als vroeger met onze ouders gingen we nu ook weer ‘op reep’ zoals we dat in Brabant noemen, oftewel lekker struinen in stadjes en dorpen.
