Vouvant ligt ten noorden van Noirt in het zuiden van de Vendée. Het dorp wordt gedomineerd door de grote Romaanse kerk die in de elfde eeuw is gebouwd. Naast de kerk staat er een oude toren van een oud kasteel die ook uit die tijd stamt.

Vouvant heeft zijn bestaan te danken aan de invallen van de Noormannen. Deze woestelingen teisterde rond het jaar 1000 Europa met plundertochten en zo ook de Vendée. Dat gebied viel toen onder gezag van de hertog van Aquitanië en om de invallen van de Scandinaviërs in te dammen besloot deze een aantal versterkte dorpen te bouwen. Vouvant is daar één van.

Onze lieve vrouwe kerk
Naast een grote burcht kreeg het dorp eigenlijk direct een priorij met een kerk. Van die eerste is slechts één toren over, de La tour Mélusine. De kerk heeft de tijd doorstaan en staat er nog. Hij is opvallend groot voor het dorp en is gebouwd in de twaalfde eeuw in de Romaanse stijl. In de vijftiende eeuw is de kerk flink verbouwd en heeft toen zijn imposante portaal gekregen. Boven de deuren zijn voorstellingen van het laatste avondmaal en de hemelvaart te zien. Goed onthouden want het maakt indruk op je reisgenoten als je dat kan vertellen als je er staat. In de zestiende eeuw viel Vouvant in handen van de Hugonoten die de priorij die bij de kerk hoorde met de grond gelijk maakten.
Vouvant trekt sinds de vorige eeuw een flink aantal kunstenaars. Er zijn in het dorp daarom ook een flink aantal galeries te vinden en er worden in de zomer tal van schilderscursussen georganiseerd voor wie zelf achter de ezel wil staan.
