Crissay-sur-Manse ligt ten zuiden van Tours op de oevers van de Manse in de regio Touraine. Het dorp heeft mooie huizen die zijn gemaakt van wit natuursteen. Het kasteel heeft betere dagen meegemaakt en is nu compleet vervallen maar het is zeker nog indrukwekkend en de huidige staat heeft natuurlijk ook zijn charme.

De geschiedenis van het dorp gaat terug tot de tiende eeuw maar de meeste gebouwen zijn van veel later, de vijftiende en zestiende eeuw op precies te zijn. De huizen zijn daarom allemaal in Franse renaissance stijl want dat was in die tijd helemaal in de mode. Voor ons is dat geen straf want ze zijn bijzonder fraai versierd en geven het dorp zijn karakter. Bijzonder is dat sommige huizen letterlijk in de rotsen zijn ingegraven en een deel daarvan zich in het kalksteen bevinden.

Natuurlijk heeft Crissay-sur-Manse een kerk die is gebouwd in de zestiende eeuw. Je moet er zeker even gaan kijken maar het is geen kunsthistorische wonder. Tot slot is er nog een wasplaats bij de rivier en dat is altijd een prima plek voor een picknick. Dan moet je wel zelf je brood meenemen want een bakker is er niet in het dorp.
Je kan er wel geitenkaas en locale wijn krijgen en die is uitstekend. Chinon en Bourgueil zijn misschien wel de meest onderschatte wijn van Frankrijk. Ze zijn namelijk razend lekker weet ik uit ervaring. Eten kan ook in het restaurant in het dorp en ook daarvoor geldt dat het waarschijnlijk wel goed is want deze streek van Frankrijk heeft een uitstekende keuken. Iets wat je waarschijnlijk wel was opgevallen als je hier bent.
