Op het eiland Ile de Ré voor de kust bij La Rochelle ligt La Flotte en Ré. Het dorp heeft een gezellige jachthaven waar een klein gedeelte wordt gebruikt door vissers. De witte huizen zijn rondom de haven gebouwd en geven het dorp een unieke karakter.

Waar nu jachten liggen was vroeger een drukke handelshaven. Hier werden vis, wijn en zout verscheept. Zout wordt nog altijd gewonnen op het eiland door zeewater in bassins te laten verdampen. Net als de rest van het eiland, dat ongeveer de helft zo groot is als Texel, is de toeristenindustrie één van de grote werkgevers. Het eiland heeft inmiddels een vaste oever verbinding en is tijdens de zomer compleet vol met toeristen. Met name de Fransen zelf mogen hier graag komen.

Naast de haven heeft La Flotte nog bezienswaardigheden. Even buiten het dorp staat de ruïne van een Cisterciënzer klooster dat een beetje de sfeer heeft van de klooster ruïnes in Engeland. De abdij is gesticht in de twaalfde eeuw waar het langzaam maar zeker groeide. Tijdens de Honderdjarige oorlog werd het klooster twee keer verwoest en twee keer werd opgebouwd. In de zestiende eeuw was het echter voorgoed afgelopen. Tijdens de godsdienstoorlogen sloopten de Hugenoten het Cisterciënzer oord waarna de monniken nooit meer terugkeerde.

De ruïne leverde de bouwstenen van een andere bezienswaardigheid van La Flotte. Het Fort De la Prée werd namelijk aan het begin van de zeventiende eeuw gebouwd met de stenen van het klooster. De burcht werd verdedigd door vierhonderd man en heeft een klein haventje. Bij de oplevering mankeerde er nog wel wat aan het gebouw, een kwaal van alle tijden. Zo was er geen rekening gehouden met het drinkwater voor de manschappen waardoor er al snel de aanpassingen moesten worden doorgevoerd.

Uiteindelijk bleek het fort toch van nut want het Franse leger verliet het pas in 1930. In 1940 werd het door de Duisters, die Frankrijk inmiddels hadden veroverd, weer in gebruik genomen en werd het onderdeel van de Atlantikwall. Na de oorlog heeft het dienst gedaan als vakantieoord voor kinderen. Nu is het een museum en kan je het bezoeken.
