Wie de drukte van de Côte d’Azur wil ontvluchten hoeft niet echt ver te rijden om het landelijke karakter van het achterland te kunnen proeven. Coaraze ligt op een half uurtje rijden ten noorden van Nice en biedt die heerlijke rust die dorpen in het zuiden van Frankrijk zo kenmerkt.
Het middeleeuwse Coaraze ligt prachtig op een heuvel die uitkijkt op helling vol met olijfbomen. De kleine zwarte olijven met hun intense smaak die hier worden verbouwd zijn geliefd in heel Frankrijk. Deze kleine vruchtjes geven de streek al eeuwenlang hun identiteit. De landelijke sfeer staat in groot contrast met de mondaine kust van Cannes en Nice.

Naast olijven, en olie natuurlijk, vindt je hier heerlijke kazen en uitstekende groenten. Je kunt hiervan genieten van op het terrassen van één van de restaurants in het dorp of je koopt ze gewoon onderweg bij een boerderij. Mocht je op zondagochtend in het dorp zijn dan doe je er goed aan om op de markt inkopen te doen.

Zonnewijzers
Bij een wandeling door de straatjes en steegjes van het dorp zal het ongetwijfeld opvallen dat veel huizen een zonnewijzer hebben. De reden is niet precies duidelijk maar zonnewijzers zijn wel een dingetje in Coaraze en dat is het al een tijdje. Halverwege de twintigste eeuw was het dorp inmiddels ontdekt door kunstenaars en in 1961 werden zes kunstenaars uitgenodigd om een zonnewijzer te ontwerpen. Deze zijn allemaal gemaakt van keramiek en zijn te bewonderen op het stadhuis en het pleintje bij de kerk.
Het park is een perfecte plek om te genieten van een picknick om daarna een bezoek te brengen aan het museum van Figas. Dit is een graficus die futuristische kunst maakte. De binnenkant van de koepel is bijzonder, of het mooi is mag je zelf uit maken.
Ten zuiden van Coaraze, op de weg richting Nice ligt een aardig kerkje ter ere van de Heilige Sebastiaan. Dit was de heilige die bescherming biedt tegen de pest en dat was ook wel noodzaak in de late middeleeuwen in Europa. Binnen zijn er fraaie fresco’s uit de zestiende eeuw te bewonderen.
Chapelle Bleu
Op de zelfde weg maar dan richting het noorden is er andere interessante kerk te zien. In de voormalig oratorium voor de Heilige maagd is de het verhaal van het leven van Christus op de muren te zien. Nu zie je dat wel meer in een kerk maar hier is het gemaakt door Ponce de Leon en die heeft er een indrukwekkend werk van gemaakt.
