Gassin ligt op een berg vlak naast Saint Tropez. In tegenstelling tot de drukke badplaats, is het dorp heerlijk rustig en heb je vanaf de oostkant een prachtig uitzicht op de Baai van St. Tropez. Het lijkt wel of de plaatselijke bevolking dit dorp voor zichzelf heeft gehouden. Hoewel Gassin leuke straatjes heeft en er keurig uitziet, geven we het toch twee sterren. Het heeft op ons geen overweldigende indruk gemaakt.

Van sommige dorpen op de lijst van ‘Les Plus Beaux Villages de France’ snap je niet helemaal wat ze er op doen. Ze zijn mooi en schilderachtig, zeker, maar om dit nu op de lijst van de mooiste dorpen te zetten is toch wat overdreven. Gassin is zo’n dorp; mooi, schilderachtig en liggend in een prachtige omgeving, maar nu niet een dorp waar je tientallen kilometers voor om gaat rijden of een plaats die je je jaren later nog herinnert om zijn schoonheid, geschiedenis of gastvrijheid.

Gassin ligt langs de Côte d’azur en is de buurman van Saint Tropez. Ik heb niet veel met die badplaats, al hebben we er wel één rondje gereden en dachten we dat we Brad Pitt zagen. Of niet, het kan mij eigenlijk niet veel schelen. Het was druk, met veel auto’s en opgedirkte vrouwen met verschrikkelijke zonnebrillen. Wij zijn doorgereden naar Gassin.

Brigitte Bardot

En hoewel het buurdorp een stuk rustiger is, kan het toch niet ontkomen aan de chique van de badplaats van Brigitte Bardot. Ongelijke straten, half ingestorte panden, onverzorgde tuinen en een half vergaan restaurant waar je de lekkerste streekgerechten kan eten, maken een dorp in het zuiden van Frankrijk voor mij aantrekkelijk. Het moet toch iets stoffigs hebben.

Je zal het niet vinden in Gassin. Er is een keurige parkeerplaats met net iets te jonge bomen voor de schaduw, de straten zijn optimaal aangelegd en tuinen staan vol met bloemen en mooie heggen. Niet veel aan dus. Ook de restaurants zijn net iets te chique om met je slippers binnen te lopen. De rosé lonkt, maar je moet toch over een bepaalde drempel heen, waarna je op de rand van het terras de ober probeert te wenken.

En toch heeft Gassin iets moois, iets eigens zelfs. Je moet daarvoor wel je gevoel maximaal gebruiken, maar het is er toch. Het dorp ligt prachtig op een heuvel en dat geeft een uitzicht op de Middellandse zee waar je een moord voor zou doen. Ook de straatjes, hoe goed geplaveid ook, hebben iets leuks, iets gezelligs. Je denkt zelfs dat je er zou kunnen verdwalen, al weet je met je verstand beter.

Het schijnt dat er drie keer per week markt is in Gassin. Wij waren er op een dag dat die er niet was. Wellicht geeft zo’n markt net het rommelige zetje dat Gassin aantrekkelijk zou maken. De markt is er op woensdag, donderdag en zondag tussen acht en twaalf uur.
