Gourdon ligt bijna achthonderd meter op een natuurlijk balkon boven de rivier de Loup. De oude huizen zijn weer in uitstekende conditie en samen met het adembenemende panorama trekt het dorp met succes veel toeristen. Eenmaal in het dorp wordt je verleidt door één van de vele winkeltjes waar kunstenaars en ambachtslieden hun waar aanbieden.

Gourdon is gebouwd rondom een stevig kasteel dat in de twaalfde eeuw is gebouwd op de fundamenten van een oudere Saraceense vesting. Nu bevat het kasteel twee musea.

De één vertelt het verhaal van de geschiedenis van het dorp en heeft een aantal interessante kunstvoorwerpen. Zo is er een zestiende-eeuws drieluik uit Vlaanderen en sculptuur van El Greco.

Het andere museum richt zich op kunst uit de jaren twintig en dertig uit de vorige eeuw. De collectie is van verrassende hoge kwaliteit en liefhebbers van Art Niveau zouden er zeker een kijkje moeten nemen.

Kasteeltuin

Het kasteel omvat nog een derde attractie en dat is de terrastuin. Deze is ontworpen door een bekende tuinontwerper; André Le Nôtre. Dit was in de zeventiende eeuw dé tuinarchitect. De beroemde tuinen van Versailles, van Vaux-le-Vicomte en St. James Park in Londen zijn ook van zijn hand. De tuin heeft een Italiaanse stijl en is dus streng staat vol met artistieke buxusbomen en omvat tevens een rotstuin en een kruidentuin. De tuin is alleen in de zomer open.

Vallée du Loup

Gourdon is één van de dorpen in de Vallée du Loup die is uitgesleten door de rivier de Loup. Het water heeft in de loop van tijd behoorlijk zijn best gedaan waardoor een kloof is ontstaan die de vergelijking met de Gordes du Verdon aankan. Met dit geologisch spektakel ben je wel een dagje zoet en vergeet de watervallen cascade des Courmes en cascade des Demoiselles niet te bekijken.
