Cotignac ligt in op ongeveer een dik uur rijden van de kust en de Lac de Saint Croix. Het dorp, of misschien wel een stadje, heeft mooie pleintjes. Bijzonder is de buurtje dat tegen een tachtig meter hoge wand is gebouwd.

Het kasteel van Chantilly is enorm en omvat naast twee musea een prachtige tuin. De ruimte doet al snel denken aan Versailles al is dat natuurlijk allemaal groter en ook wel mooier. Evengoed is ook dit kasteel een bezoek waard. Alleen de tuinen al zijn het waard om deze prachtige plek te bezoeken. En ja hier is volgens de legende de slagroom uitgevonden, maar zoals veel legendes is dat niet helemaal waar. Maar het is een legende en dat is altijd goed bij een groot kasteel.

Het kasteel van Cormatin in het zuiden van Bourgondië ligt op een eiland in het riviertje Grosne op een klein half uur rijden van Cluny. Het kasteel is gebouwd als woning en heeft nooit dienst gedaan als verdedigingswerk. Binnen zijn een aantal kamers te vinden uit de achttiende eeuw die uniek zijn voor de geschiedenis van Frankrijk. Guédelon ligt midden in de bossen van Noord-Bourgondië en is sinds 1997 de plek waar een ‘middeleeuws’ kasteel wordt gebouwd. Het kasteel ‘uit’ de dertiende eeuw wordt nu pas gebouwd volgens de oorspronkelijke technieken. Dit bleek een groot succes waarbij meer dan 300.000 mensen per jaar komen kijken. Een bezoek is ook aan te raden. Het kasteel is open van april tot november.

Polignac ligt even ten noorden van le Puy-en-Valey in het zuiden van Frankrijk. Het dorp is gebouwd rondom een vulkanische berg waarop de voornaamste attractie zich bevindt; een kasteel. Althans de overblijfselen daarvan en die zijn er precies genoeg om voor ons eentwintigste-eeuwers de fantasie op hol te laten brengen. Het prachtige uitzicht op Le Puy helpt daar ook flink bij.

Tussen het D-Day geweld op het schiereiland Cotentin is het makkelijk om de andere mooie en interessante plekken over het hoofd te zien. Het vissersdorp Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue met zijn mooie baai en oude forten is daar een goed voorbeeld van. Het ligt op half uur rijden van Utah-Beach en werd in 2019 door de Fransen zelf gekozen tot mooiste dorp van het jaar.

Wie aan Frankrijk denkt aan stokbrood, wijn, kaas en kastelen. Van de die laatste hebben ze daar honderden, zo niet duizenden, staan. Groot, klein, lelijk, kapot, romantisch of kitsch, je hebt ze in alle soorten en maten. Maar Frankrijk is ook het land waar formaat wel degelijk belangrijk is en daarom vroeg ik mij af wat nou de grootste kastelen in Frankrijk zijn.

Peyrusse-le-Roc ligt in het mooie gebied van tussen rivieren de Lot en de Aveyron. Wat nu een rustig dorp is was aan het einde van middeleeuwen een drukke stad.
