De Ardèche is een van de populaire provincies in Frankrijk, vooral onder vakantiegangers. Voornaamste redenen, zijn de afstand (1.050 kilometer van Amsterdam) en dus prima te berijden met tent of caravan en het aangename klimaat. Het zuidelijke deel rondom de gelijknamige rivier en Le Vallon Pont d’Arc is bij velen bekend en dus ook druk bezocht.

De markt in Boucieu-le-Roi is heerlijk rustig en niet overladen met toeristen.Maar wat nu als je die drukte wilt omzeilen en toch de charme van de Ardèche wilt ervaren? Dan is het noordelijke deel minstens zo interessant en lang niet zo druk. Dus als u de volgende keer toch weer zuidwaarts trekt, neem dan vanaf de Route du Soleil (A7) de afslag bij Tain l’Hermitage, steek bij Tournon de  Rhône over en trek de heuvels in, richting Lamastre (D534). Langs de rivier de Doux ervaar je al direct de rust van deze regio. Op nog geen half uur rijden, ligt het 13e eeuwse dorpje Boucieu-le-Roi (D209), een village caractère.

Artistiek

De laatste jaren is Boucieu steeds meer op het toerisme gericht, onder andere door regionale marktjes, maar vooral door kunst. Je vindt deze op onverwachte binnenplaatsjes, waar je vrijblijvend kunt binnenwandelen.

Laat je je rijden, of ben je sportief?

Een andere bezienswaardigheid vind je beneden het dorp. Nabij de rivier de Doux en het spoorwegstationnetje houdt er in de zomer een paar keer per week le Mastrou en Le Train d’Ardèche halt. Deze stoomtrein is een aanrader, zeker als je de Gorges d’Ardeche van dichtbij wilt ervaren of als je naar de markt van Lamastre (dinsdag) wilt. Van hieruit gaan er ook een aantal wandelroutes rondom het dorpje. De sportievelingen kunnen ook hun energie kwijt in de Velo Rail. Vanaf Boucieu trap je met z’n vieren met gemak in comfortabele en sportieve karretjes naar Pont de Troye. Op sommige tracés gaat het zelfs erg rap. Menig achtbaan is er niets bij. Bij het  eindpunt aangekomen, brengt de Autorail – een diesel loc – je terug naar Boucieu-le-Roi.

Knorrende magen

Bij aankomst kan je op het station je honger stillen met regionale delicatessen, charcuterie en fruit. En als het zo’n heerlijke warme dag is, loop dan 5 minuten naar de oude Le Pont du Roi (vernoemd naar Philippe le Bel) over de Doux, die hier door het landschap meandert en zorgt voor de hoognodige verkoeling. Of nuttig een helder biertje, rosé of limonade aux fraises bij de bistro (waar je ook ook prima kan eten).

Wil je langer in deze streek blijven dan is er binnen een kilometer een camping. Deze biedt het hoognodige voor een aantrekkelijke prijs, geen zwembad, wel de rivier op steenworp afstand. Het dorp Boucieu biedt ook nog enkele Gîtes de France. Zo raak je langzaam bekend met het onbekende.
