Pérouges is een waar mekka voor liefhebbers van de Middeleeuwen. Hier loop je op de set van een dure film over de Middeleeuwen en dat is letterlijk zo want meer dan eens is hier een film opgenomen. De kronkelige straatjes, de prachtige huizen en de gezellige pleintjes nodigen uit tot wandelen en slenteren. Het middeleeuwse plaatje is geheel compleet, behalve dan de stank en armoede uit die tijd. En dat is des te beter.

Het dorp, ooit een stad trouwens, ten noorden van Lyon was in de negentiende eeuw compleet verlaten en verwoest maar is in de twintigste eeuw weer helemaal hersteld. Dat hebben ze netjes gedaan want het is gelukt om het oorspronkelijke dorp is zoveel mogelijk nagebouwd. Restauraties van dorpen en steden ging in het verleden nog wel eens mis, denk maar eens aan Brugge dat iets meer middeleeuws is dan het in de middeleeuwen was.

In de late middeleeuwen was Pérouges een belangrijke stad die werd betwist door de Dauphine en Savoie. Er is om de vijftiende eeuw ook hard om gevochten waarna het uiteindelijk door Frankrijk werd ingelijfd. In de zeventiende en achttiende eeuw kende de stad een economische bloei waarbij het verbouwen van hennep centraal stond. Dat rookten ze niet op maar gebruikten het om touw en linnen van te maken. In die tijd woonden er meer dan 1.500 mensen in het dorp. In de negentiende eeuw bleek de ligging van het dorp een probleem.

Pérouges lag te ver van een spoorweg en kon zo de fabrieken in Lyon niet bevoorraden waardoor het dorp leegliep. Aan het begin van de twintigste eeuw woonden er nog maar negentig mensen in het dorp en werden complete huizenblokken gesloopt. Dankzij een comité en de inzet van enkele kunstenaars werd het dorp uiteindelijk weer helemaal in oude staat hersteld.

Bijzonder is de middeleeuwse tuin die onderdeel is van de Maisons de Princes et de Jean-Escoffier, het plaatselijke museum.
