De geschiedenis van het dorp gaat terug naar het einde van elfde eeuw toen de bisschop van Périgueux besloot om hier een priorij te stichten. De bewoners werden beschermd door het kasteel van La Marthonie dat ook rond deze tijd is gebouwd. Dankzij de goede liggen op het kruispunt van wegen weet de priorij zich snel uit te breiden waardoor het dorp ontstaat.

Vanaf de veertiende eeuw is het gedaan met de welvaart. Tijdens de Honderjarige oorlog veroveren de Engelse legers het dorp die het kasteel en de priorij verwoesten. In de vijftiende eeuw wordt het dorp weer Frans maar een eeuw later wordt het tijdens de godsdienstoorlogen meerdere keren geplunderd. Na de revolutie aan het einde van de achttiende eeuw wordt de priorij voorgoed opgeheven en de gebouwen verkocht.
Ondanks dit geweld is er best nog veel te zien in Saint Jean de Cole. Eén van de meest interessante gebouwen is de kerk van de priorij waarvan alleen het koor nog staat.
Deze is gewijd aan Johannes de Doper en heeft Byzantijnse plattegrond, in Frankrijk is dat redelijk zeldzaam. Ook van gebouwen van priorij staan nog redelijk wat overeind en hebben een aantal mooie renaissance details. Helaas is deze alleen open tijdens de Open Monumentendag.
De oude brug over de rivier de Cole is ook even het bezoeken waard. Deze stamt uit de twaalfde eeuw en ligt prachtig over het water, een mooi plaatje.
