De Lot-et-Garonne is een heerlijke streek die ligt in de regio Nouvelle-Aquitaine in het zuidwesten van Frankrijk. Van de twee prachtige rivieren die het departement zijn naam geven is De Lot misschien wel de mooiste. Hier kan je prima wandelen, fietsen kanoën of gewoon lekker toeren. In het glooiende landschap liggen prachtige stadjes en de mooiste bastide dorpen.

Tussen de Dordogne en de Lot ligt op een hoog kalkstenen plateau het Kasteel van Chateau de Gavaudun. Of wat er van over is tenminste. Hoe kan ook is het een prachtige klassieke ruïne uit de middeleeuwen met een merkwaardige poort. Het ligt prachtig in een kloof en je kan er lekker wandelen. Kortom; genoeg om een middagje te vullen.

Villerèal ligt tussen de rivieren De Lot en de Dordogne in en is net als onder andere Damazan, Monflanquin en Monpazier een zogenaamde Bastide dorp. Dit type dorp is typerend voor deze streek in het zuidwesten van Frankrijk. Villerèal heeft een bijzonder grote markthal en een versterkte kerk. In 2018 werd Villarèal een Plus Beaux Village de France en wij bezochten het dorp direct die zomer.

Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port ligt in Frans Baskenland in de Pyreneeën dichtbij de Spaanse grens. Het dorp ligt op de Camino Francé of wel de pelgrimsroute naar Santiago de Compostella. Deze positie heeft de ontwikkeling van de plaats in grote mate bepaald. Daarbij is Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port vooral een Baskische stad waar de de lokale cultuur een belangrijke rol speelt.

Limeuil ligt waar de rivier de Vézère uitmondt in de Dordogne in de Perigord. Het dorp is misschien één van de oudst nu nog bewoonde plek in Frankrijk want hier zijn spulletjes gevonden van mensen die aan het einde van de laatste ijstijd op rendieren en mammoeten jaagden. Dat moet een stevige barbecue zijn geweest. Daar is tegenwoordig niet veel meer van te zien maar dat gelukkig is er nog genoeg te beleven.

Het dorp ligt in de streek Perigord Poupre dat zo is genoemd naar de bladeren van de wijnranken die in de herfst paars kleuren. Lees verder Limeuil: dorp langs twee rivieren **** →

De streek Aquitanië vormt nu een onderdeel van de veel grotere nieuwe regio ‘Nouvelle-Aquitaine’ dat in 2016 is gevormd. Het gebied omvat een groot deel van het zuidoosten van Frankrijk en heeft als hoofdstad Bordeaux.

Historisch gezien is de regio al sinds de Romeinen een eenheid, al is het alleen maar administratief. De verschillen tussen de verschillende streken zijn hier namelijk best groot. Het landschap en ook de cultuur in de Pyrénées-Atlantiques tegen de Spaanse grens is totaal anders dan het platte Les Landes.

In Nederland zijn de streken van Aquitanië veel bekender dan de regio zelf. Zeg tegen iemand dat je op vakantie gaat de Lot of de Dordogne en iedereen weet wel waar je heen gaat. Waar je ook bent in Aquitanië water speelt altijd een rol. Het riviergebied tussen de Garonne, Lot en Dordogne is licht glooiend en vooral erg groen terwijl de lange kust de grote golven van de Oceaan een paradijs is voor surfers.

La Bastide-Clairence ligt in het Franse gedeelte van Baskenland ten oosten van Bayonne net boven de Spaanse grens in zuidwest Frankrijk . Het dorp werd in 1312 gesticht door de koning van Navarra, die later ook koning van Frankrijk werd. De ambities van koningen van kleine landjes werden toen nog gehonoreerd. Zevenhonderd jaar later is de typische opzet van een bastidedorp nog altijd goed te herkennen. De straten van het strakke stadsplan zijn in tegenstelling tot andere bastides hier gevuld met witte vakwerkhuizen met rode of groene accenten.

Navarrenx is een vestingsplaats in het zuidwesten van Frankrijk tussen Pau en Bayonne. Het dorp is gesticht in de veertiende eeuw om de route van de pelgrimstocht naar Santiago de Compestella te beschermen. Dat het dorp van strategisch belang was blijkt wel uit het feit dat ook na de middeleeuwen de vesting is uitgebreid. Nu biedt het ons een prachtig uitzicht op de rivier de Gave met de bergen van de Pyreneeën op de achtergrond.

Monfanquin ligt precies tussen de Périgord en Guyenne en dat heeft de geschiedenis en het uiterlijk van het dorp voor een groot deel bepaald. Het dorp ligt op de heuvel Pech de Monflanquin en dat levert nu een mooi plaatje op maar de reden waarom het dorp juist daar ligt is een veel gewelddadiger; op een heuvel kan je een dorp goed verdedigen en dat was nodig ook.

Sare is een dorp in Frans Baskenland en ligt dicht bij de Spaanse grens onder Biarritz. Het ligt in de Pyreneeën en hier worden de traditionele Baskische gebruiken gekoesterd en bewaard. Het is tevens een prima uitvalbasis voor wandeltochten in dit woeste berggebied tussen Frankrijk en Spanje.
