Aubeterre-sur-Dronne herbergt één van de meest opvallende attracties van alle Beaux Villages in Frankrijk. In een enorme krijtrots bevindt zich de grootste ondergrondse kerk van Europa. De kerk is gedurende de middeleeuwen uitgehakt en is maar liefst twintig meter hoog. Naast deze ondergrondse kerk staat er nog een alleraardigst exemplaar boven de grond en natuurlijk mag een kasteel niet ontbreken in een Frans dorp.

Aubeterre sur Dronne ligt op een rots boven de rivier de Dronne vlakbij de plek waar de grenzen van drie oude Franse provincies bij elkaar komen. Tel daarbij de hoge ligging boven de rivier en het is duidelijk dat het dorp strategisch belangrijk was. Daarbij kwam nog bij dat het ligt op de pelgrimsroute naar Santiago de Compostella en dat is natuurlijk ook niet slecht voor de ontwikkeling.

Voor de pelgrims werd in de twaalfde eeuw een kerk gebouwd en het is dan ook niet vreemd dat de naam van de heilige Jacobus draagt, de heilige die ligt begraven in Santiago de Compostella. Het gebouw is behoorlijk eclectisch want het is een ratjetoe van verschillende stijlen en culturen en dat maakt het bijzonder interessant. De opvallende rechte voorgevel heeft duidelijk byzantijnse invloeden terwijl de drie portalen romaans zijn. De abstracte versieringen doen denken aan de Moorse cultuur uit de Spanje maar ook aan de edelsmeedkunst uit Scandinavië en van de Karolingers. Ondanks dat de kerk tijdens de godsdienstoorlogen in de zestiende eeuw zeer zwaar was beschadigd staat er dus nog genoeg om van te genieten.

Ondergrondse kerk

De kerk in het dorp is kunsthistorisch interessant maar de meest indrukwekkende bouwsel in Aubeterre sur Dronne is de kerk die is gebouwd in een rots. Eigenlijk is hij niet gebouwd maar slechts uitgehouden. Dit zie je niet vaak  maar het is ook weer niet zo uniek. In het zuidwesten van Frankrijk zijn er wel meer. Zo is er een ondergrondse kerk in Saint Emilion en een uitgehakte kapel in Mortagne-sur-Gironde. Daarnaast zijn er nog veel kerken die half zijn uitgehakt uit een rots zoals in Rocamadour.

Bijzonder van deze ondergrondse kerk is met name het formaat, hij is namelijk best groot. Het schip is maar liefst 20 meter hoog en heeft ook nog eens galerijen. Naast de kerk zelf is er ook nog een ruimte waar de graven als sarcofagen uit de rots zijn uitgehakt.

Natuurlijk heeft het dorp een kasteel en die heeft een indrukwekkende poort. Tot slot heeft het dorp een aangenaam centrum met tal van restaurants, galeries en maar liefst drie musea. Langs de rivier is er een strandje waar je bovendien een kano kan huren waarmee je de Dronne kan bevaren.
