Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère ligt tien kilometer van Montignac in de Périgord en is een heerlijk rustig dorp dat is gebouwd op de oever van de Vézère. Het pronkstuk van het dorp is de Romaanse kerk die vlak lang de rivier ligt.

Zoals je waarschijnlijk hebt gemerkt als je meer artikelen hebt gelezen op deze site, heb ik een voorkeur voor middeleeuwse architectuur. Er zijn twee grote stijlen uit die tijd die voor de leek ook makkelijk te herkennen zijn, Gotisch en Romaans. De gotiek kenmerkt zich door veel versieringen, hoge ramen en plafonds zoals de kathedraal van Reims. Romaans is ouder en lijkt op het eerste gezicht minder elegant. Deze stijl kenmerkt zich door de vormen en verhoudingen waardoor de gebouwen op een hele andere manier indrukwekkend zijn, het kruipt meer onder je huid. Een prachtig voorbeeld is de abdij van Fontenay.

In Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère staat ook een prachtig voorbeeld van de Romaanse bouwkust. Het kerkje staat bovendien nog eens op een prachtige plek op de fundamenten van een Romeinse villa. Het was ooit onderdeel van een priorij maar die is in de loop van de tijd verdwenen. Hoewel de kerk niet heel groot is kloppen hier de verhoudingen, vooral binnen is de ruimte betoverend mooi.
Naast de kerk heeft Saint-Léon-sur-Vézère natuurlijk een schilderachtige dorpskern en maar liefst twee kastelen. Het dorp is tevens nog het decor van een vreemd verhaal dat zich afspeelde op het kerkhof. Daar staat een Gotische kapel waar een tekst boven de deur refereert naar een opmerkelijke gebeurtenis in de dertiende eeuw. Hier zou een man een pijl hebben afgeschoten op een kruis waarna hij direct dood neerviel met zijn hoofd in een halve slag gedraaid. Dit soort verhalen waren er in de middeleeuwen wel meer maar deze geschiedenis kreeg in 1890 nog een opmerkelijk staartje. Aan het einde van de negentiende eeuw werd namelijk een graf geopend met daarin een lichaam waarvan het hoofd een halve slag was gedraaid.
