La Bastide-Clairence ligt in het Franse gedeelte van Baskenland ten oosten van Bayonne net boven de Spaanse grens in zuidwest Frankrijk . Het dorp werd in 1312 gesticht door de koning van Navarra, die later ook koning van Frankrijk werd. De ambities van koningen van kleine landjes werden toen nog gehonoreerd. Zevenhonderd jaar later is de typische opzet van een bastidedorp nog altijd goed te herkennen. De straten van het strakke stadsplan zijn in tegenstelling tot andere bastides hier gevuld met witte vakwerkhuizen met rode of groene accenten.

Naast de kleur van de huizen verraadt een speciaal sportcomplex dat je in Baskenland bent. In La Bastide-Clairence bevinden zich de oudste nog in in gebruik zijnde trinquet en dat is een sportveld.
Op dit veld werd volgens de bronnen al in 1512 al Pelote basque wordt gespeeld. De naam verraadt al dat het om een typische Baskische sport gaat dat lijkt op kaatsen. Kaatsen was in de late middeleeuwen en later zeer populair en werd gespeeld in heel West-Europa.
De sport, of spel zoals je wilt, ook in de geschiedenisboekjes gekomen want met de eed op de kaatsbaan begon feitelijk de Franse Revolutie. Maar ook in Nederland en Engeland was het een bekende sport, Hendrik VIII was er bijvoorbeeld dol op.

In tegenstelling tot het kaatsen dat nu in Friesland wordt gespeeld, bestaat het spel uit het slaan van een bal tegen een muur de tegenstander moet dan vervolgens de bal verwerken. Er zijn verschillende varianten die vooral in Spaanstalig landen worden beoefend. Dat juist in Frankrijk de oudst nog in gebruik zijnde veld ligt moet daar toch gevoelig liggen. Hoe dan ook is het één van de oudste sportvelden van de wereld en dat is altijd interessant om even te bekijken.
Naast deze sportieve geschiedenis heeft La Bastide-Clairence een kerk en een aardige brug. Omdat de Pyreneeën vlakbij liggen is er genoeg vertier in de omgeving te vinden. Wandelen, fietsen, raften en canyoning is hier in de directe omgeving allemaal mogelijk.
