Het dorp werd in 1312 gesticht door de koning van Navarra, die later ook koning van Frankrijk werd. De ambities van koningen van kleine landjes werden toen nog gehonoreerd. Zevenhonderd jaar later is de typische opzet van een bastidedorp nog altijd goed te herkennen. Het dorp is gesticht in de veertiende eeuw om de route van de pelgrimstocht naar Santiago de Compestella te beschermen. Dat het dorp van strategisch belang was blijkt wel uit het feit dat ook na de middeleeuwen de vesting is uitgebreid. De mooie vakwerkhuizen met hun rode luiken zijn kenmerkend voor deze streek en geven het dorp karakter. Het dorp is gebouwd als een bastide en is daarmee waarschijnlijk de zuidelijkste in zijn soort.
