Charroux ligt in de Allier tussen Vichy, Montlucon en Clemont-Ferrand. Het dorp ligt aan de voet van het Central Massief en niet zover van de snelweg. Als je de oude weg naar het zuiden neemt via Moulins is het de moeite waard om hier een tussenstop te plannen voor een goede lunch of een overnachting.

Charroux was in de middeleeuwen zowel strategisch als economisch een belangrijke plaats in de regio. De rijkdom uit die tijd is nu nog te zien in de natuurstenen gevels van de huizen. Hoewel het dorp niet groot is zijn er redelijk wat bezienswaardigheden te bewonderen.

Zo is er een museum van volkskunst en tradities, ongetwijfeld leuk voor de geïnteresseerde maar ik zou daar toch voorbij lopen. Al kunnen dit soort lokale musea ook een aantrekkelijke charme hebben waardoor je je uitstekend vermaakt. Als je zin hebt is het de gok waar dus.

Dat geldt wellicht ook voor de Maison des Horloges al klinkt die toch leuker. Zeker interessant is de kerk die gewijd is aan Johannes de Doper met zijn karakteristieke afgeknotte torenspits.

Tot slot wordt in Charroux ook mosterd gemaakt. In Frankrijk wordt de mosterd hoofdzakelijk gemaakt in Dijon maar er zijn dus ook nog andere plekken waar ze dit goedje fabriceren. Je kan hier ongetwijfeld iemand aan het werk zien die op ambachtelijke wijze mosterd maakt. Het zou best kunnen dat alle mosterd hier op deze wijze wordt gemaakt, maar het gaat natuurlijk om de mosterd zelf. En die is lekker!
