Le Castellet ligt helemaal in het zuiden van Frankrijk even ten oosten van Toulon. Het dorp is vooral bekend om zijn autorace circuit maar heeft ook een zeer gezellig centrum met bochtige straatjes met kleurrijke winkels. De sfeer is uitstekend en op verschillende plekken heb je een fantastische uitzicht de kuststreek.

Karolingische gebouwen zijn er niet zo veel in Frankrijk maar in Germigny-des-Prés bij de Loire staat een zeer bijzondere kerkje dat ooit onderdeel vormde van de villa van één van de topadviseurs van Karel de Grote zelf. Dichterbij de grote keizer kan je bijna niet komen, in Frankrijk althans.

Cluny ligt in het zuiden van Bourgondië ongeveer negentig kilometer ten noorden van Lyon. De kleine stad was ooit het centrum van het Christendom dankzij het enorme klooster. Een deel van de abdijcomplex wordt nu gebruikt door de Nationale stoeterij waardoor paarden een grote rol spelen in het huidige Cluny.

Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire was in de middeleeuwen twee eeuwen lang één van de toonaangevende cultuurcentra in Frankrijk en daarmee in West-Europa. Hier stond een machtig klooster met een bibliotheek met een enorme collectie met de mooiste boeken van de wereld en misschien wel de mooiste die ooit zijn gemaakt.

Rochechouart is een kleine stoere stad gelegen in het Franse departement de Haute-Vienne. Elke keer als ik deze stad binnen rij beneemt mij de blik op het chateau dat hoog boven de omgeving uittorent de adem. De twee torens zijn dominant aanwezig, schapen grazen op de heuvel onder het kasteel en de rustig kabbelende rivier maakt het plaatje compleet.

In het departement Aude in de Languedoc ligt boven op een heuvel het dorpje Rennes-le-Château. Deze plek was al bewoond in de tijd van de Visigothen en was toen zelfs een belangrijke plaats maar dat is nu moeilijk voor te stellen, het dorpje heeft amper 100 inwoners. Toch is deze plek in heel Frankrijk en zelfs daarbuiten bekend maar dat heeft te maken met de priester die hier aan het einde van de negentiende eeuw op een mysterieuze wijze plots over een enorm vermogen beschikte.

La Romieu ligt in het zuidwesten van Frankrijk tussen Auch en Agen in de Midi-Pyrénées op de pelgrimsroute naar Santiago de Compostela. Het dorp wordt gedomineerd door de grote kerk die in de veertiende eeuw is gebouwd maar heeft ook prachtig dorpsplein met arcaden die karakteristiek zijn voor dit deel van Frankrijk. Net buiten het dorp is een botanische tuin waar je heerlijk kunt wandelen. La Romieu is sinds 2018 een ‘Plus Beaux Village de France’.

Zoals veel dorpjes is Locronan ontstaan rondom een klooster. Het klooster werd in de zesde eeuw gesticht door de heilige Ronan. We weten niet zo veel over deze goede man maar hij was waarschijnlijk afkomstig uit Ierland en naar Bretagne afgereisd om het christendom te promoten. Een soort Bonifatius van Bretagne zou je kunnen zeggen. Zijn relieken liggen nog altijd in het kerkje dat hier in de vijftiende eeuw is gebouwd.
