Usson is gebouwd op een vulkanische piek dat hoog boven de vallei van Allier uitsteekt. Het dorp heeft een mooie ruïne, een aardig romaans kerkje, een niet zo mooi maar groot beeld en prachtig uitzicht over de Vallei, de Monts Dore en de Puys.

Boven het dorp staat een prachtige ruïne van wat ooit een machtig kasteel moet zijn geweest. En dat was het ook, al heeft het nooit echt een militaire rol gespeeld.

Toch komt de kasteel van Usson twee keer voor in de geschiedenisboekjes. Het was in de zestiende eeuw de gevangenis van de Koning Margot. Hendrik IV was het gedrag van Margaretha van Valois zoals ze eigenlijk heette, behoorlijk zat en stuurde haar naar Usson.

Dat zijn nog eens maatregelen om een relatie stop te zetten!

Hoewel de ruïne doet vermoeden dat hier een heftige strijd is geleverd, maar dat is allerminst het geval. Het kasteel is namelijk gesloopt op bevel van Kardinaal Richelieu omdat het in zijn ogen te sterk was. Het zou zomaar een broeinest van protest tegen het gezag in Parijs kunnen worden.

Van al dit tumult merk je vandaag de dag niets meer in het dorp. Naast de ruïne is er een romaans kerk en loopt er een voetpad naar een wit beeld van de heilige maagd bovenop de vulkanische berg. Het pad leidt langs een enorm brok basalt dat iets weg heeft van orgelpijpen. Helemaal boven kan je genieten van het prachtige uitzicht en van een niet al te mooi beeld van Maria.
